November 2009 Special rates for New Guests Only of the Terra Cotta Inn

Palm Springs has been having fantastic weather. We are having one of our most popular summers ever in our history and October and November look to be just as busy just as busy.

Palm Springs is the sunniest city in the US. For instance the last time it rained here was in February 2009 over 8 month ago. Why risk having a tropical storm in Florida, Mexico, or the Caribbean raining on your fall this year, when you are almost always guaranteed sunshine in sunny Palm Springs!

We average one of the highest repeat guest rates in the travel industry at just over a 75% repeat guest rate. And that is with couples from around the world vacationing here.

We are the only clothing optional vacation resort in the western US that caters to couples on vacation. What that means is we are popular 7 days a week. We are not just a weekend getaway like most other places.

This November, we are running a special for new guests of the Terra Cotta Inn on Sunday thru Thursday nights. Take $25 off on your over night stay. Just mention this special when you book and bring in this discount coupon. Once you stay here, you will want to become a repeat guest forever!

Just click on the discount coupon to be able to print it or print off this whole page, which ever is easier.

We have always been the best value nudist resort in the US and the best value hotel in ALL of Palm Springs. And this special saves you even more money. With every nights stay we include complimentary breakfast and and afternoon snacks, early check in (10am) and late check out (5pm) at no extra charge. Plus, we do not charge resort fees or day fees to overnight guests. So there are no hidden charges. We are such a great value that in our soda machine, Coke and Pepsi is still only $.50/can.

We have top of the line beds, free Godiva brand in room coffee, state of the art salt water pool and jacuzzi that feels heavenly on your bare skin, high pressure poolside misting/cooling system, free wifi, DVD players in all rooms and a free video library, iPod docks and much more.

This November our massage therapists are running a special, get 1 one hour massage and the 2nd massage is half priced. This can be split by a couple or taken by the same person. And obviously you do not have to receive both massages on the same day. This special is available 7 days a week. It is popular so book your massages in advance.

If you have always wanted to try topless or nude sunbathing, now is the time. We are the most mainstream clothing optional resort in the US and perfect for couples topless or nude sunbathing for the first time.

Last year AOL.com picked us as one of the 10 best clothing optional resorts in the world. And in July, Australian's major media site news.au.com picked us as one of the 10 best nudist resorts in the world.

So this November, say goodbye to your funny tan lines forever. Give us a call at

Vacation at a nudist Colony - Top wish on many bucket lists

I have been reading more and more blogs lately that have bucket lists. One of the must do items I see is vacationing at nudist colonies or going to nude beaches. Of course most people use the term nudist colony or nudist colonies instead of nudist resort or nudist resorts which is the correct term.

Here is an example from a blog I just read:

"Today my husband is celebrating another year! This year is extra special because it’s nearing the end of an era. He will be 30 next year.

To celebrate his youthfulness, some family and friends put together a little list of 29 things to do before turning 30. We pose this to him as a challenge and also offer it up as a way to ensure year 29 is a very memorable one. As he accomplishes the items on the list, I will blog about them as well as include photos where possible; so be sure to check back often!

29 “Must Do” Things Before Turning 30 (listed in no particular order)
1. Swing by your knees on a flying trapeze
2. Teach the cat a trick
3. Develop your own cocktail and name it
4. Take a day trip to the local nudist colony...

For the full list Click here

One of the items on this persons bucket list besides going to a nudist colony is "wear a Hawaiian shirt for one day", I do that all the time when I am in public here in Palm Springs. I couldn't imagine not wearing Hawaiian shirts as they are so comfortable.

If you wish to knock off another number on your bucket list by vacationing at the best nudist resort in the US then give us, the Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa a call.

Is Twitter a Fad That will Fade?

I've been using Twitter since about May letting people know all about our resort The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa, last minute availability, airfare sales, interesting stories in the nudist world, etc.

I find twitter useful and stupid. I have learned about last minute airfare sales from it (and I pass on the information or retweet it), I have learned more marketing techniques. I have learned interesting news stories and more. So in that respect, Twitter is a useful tool.

Also Twitter was the first to break many news stories even alerting the mainstream media to them such as the uprisings in Iran over their elections and information about the jet that had an emergency landing a few months back in the Hudson river.

Why People Magazine even sent out a tweet on Friday August 28th about our resort dog Godiva passing away. Here it is:

"RT @PEOPLEPets R.I.P. Godiva the dog, a nudism fan Lady Gaga would've loved: http://ow.ly/n7k3 (Tx and condolences to @nudist_resorts)
2:00 PM Aug 28th @peoplemag" That's pretty big as People Magazine has 1.4 million followers.

That said, twitter is also an extremely boring fad. I don't care that Shaquille O'Neal ate an ice cream cone. I don't care that someone is bored and painting their toenails. And I would bet most people don't care about those tweets either.

I think twitter will be like blogs and evolve. There are well over 100 million blogs and most are abandoned shortly after being started. Technorati estimates 1.6 million blogs are active on a daily basis and 16 million blogs are active at least once every 90 days.

So I find twitter will be very useful for people looking for information and useless for people who don't care what some stranger ate for lunch.

Here is a poll from Vanity Fair and 60 minutes. You will notice a good percentage think Twitter is a fad. It will be interesting to see what twitter evolves into.

"November 2009 The Vanity Fair/60 Minutes Poll

Do you think TWITTER is … ?

Vacation trends on Vanity Fair Poll

Vanity Fair along with 60 Minutes came out with a poll about the economy, politicians, twitter, the recession, spending cut backs and more. The whole survey and article is 12 pages long on Vanity Fair's website.

One of the question had to do with cutting vacation spending as in how easy or hard it to to cut vacation spending.

Of the 18-29 year old respondents, 82% said it was not difficult to cut back on vacation spending. Contrasted to only 65% of people age 64+ saying it was not difficult cutting back on vacation spending.

This has a few implications on marketing nudist resorts. One implication is people say it is so hard to get younger people to vacation at nudist resorts. That is true. We are one of the few nudist resorts in the US where our guests are between 21-75 in age. But, I know some of the major reason why are younger people don't have as much money to spend as baby boomers and older guests, and they don't have as much vacation time. So I don't think it is all doom and gloom that younger people don't like to get naked, they just can't afford to and don't have the vacation time. Vacations is one of the first things people scale back on during hard economic times.

The other thing is 65% of older people said it still was not difficult cutting back on vacation spending. For nudist resorts, this means tell new customers what great values it is to vacation at nudist resorts.

Our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn is not only the best value nudist resort in the US, we are also one of the best values of ALL hotels in Palm Springs. True Palm Springs is a more expensive city to be located in because we have the BEST weather of the whole US. We will never be inexpensive like a motel located in the middle of Nebraska for instance, but for being located in a world class resort city such as Palm Springs, we are a fantastic value.

Nudist resorts need to continue to empathize our great values here in the US. Nudist resorts need to continue to get the message out to Americans to stop vacationing at overpriced non nudist owned places in the Caribbean and Mexico. Send the message to new customers to go with value in the good old USA.

Here is the question regarding vacation cutbacks from the survey:

"November 2009 The Vanity Fair/60 Minutes Poll

In this recession, which of the following has been the most difficult thing for you to CUT BACK SPENDING ON?

TOTAL 18–29 30–44 45–64 64+ MEN WOMEN
Dining out 33% 39% 34% 36% 20% 34% 33%
Vacations 27 18 32 26 35 29 25
New clothes 14 23 12 12 8 9 18
Alcohol 4 10 1 4 1 6 2
None of the above 13 6 13 15 22 15 12"

6 Tips for successful nudist blogs

I have been blogging now for over 3 years. With both of my blogs, this one and the NSFW version Click here for NSFW version I get a lot of e-mails and comments. About 1000-1500 users per day see my blog.

In talking with new guests of our resort The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa, Palm Springs, CA, most have read our blog which go them interested in taking a vacation at our resort.

If you are thinking of doing a blog whether on nudism or some other topic, I thought this post was helpful. Here it is:

6 Tips for Customizing Your Small Business Blog

If you’re like most socially-savvy companies, your business probably has a blog. It’s a great way to connect with your customers, announce new products, and provide a human face to your company’s image...

A Few Key Tips

1. Install some top blog plugins:... While there are tens of thousands of plugins available on multiple platforms, a business blog should focus on search engine optimization (SEO), making the blog load faster, and making it easy for others to share blog posts via email, Twitter, and other social networks...

2. Integrate social media links and buttons: Don’t be afraid to integrate Facebook and Twitter on a business blog. It’s a standard practice and will help drive new visitors to your blog. Social media buttons make it easy for customers to tweet out your work, while adding links to the company’s Twitter and YouTube accounts will help bolster their numbers and improve their ranking in search.

3. Focus on simple designs, not bells and whistles: The focus of a blog should be on the content, not on widgets or sidebars or flashy designs...

4. Do show effort in the design, though: A corporate blog is also a chance to show off a human element of the company and to be creative...

5. Have your blog on your own web domain: Most companies have their blogs at blog.companyurl.com...

6. Don’t hide your “about” information: Assume that your average reader has never heard about your company. If you have that in mind, you want to be sure they can quickly find out more about you. Either have a paragraph at the top or on the side describing the company, or make the “About” page very prominent.

Good luck with your blogging. It's lots of fun and lots of work.

And for those of you looking for a fun vacation here is my plug following top #6 above:

A Nice Story about a Woman's first experience at a nude beach

CLICK ON THIS DISCOUNT COUPON TO ENLARGE IT AND TO PRINT IT OFF TO USE

Above is a money saving coupon to encourage first timers to try topless or nude sunbathing at our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn, clothing optional resort and spa. We are called the most mainstream nudist resort in America and are perfect for first timer couples. Just print off this page to use this discount coupon at our nudist resort.

Bloggers and webmasters are more than welcome to re-post this discount coupon on other sites and blogs.

Below is a post from a woman writing about her first experience at a nude beach. Like all women, she went from being nervous to really liking it and recommending everyone trying it.

Here's her story:

"10 Traveler’s Tips For Rocking A Nudist Beach

Travelers tend to enjoy ultimate freedom on the road, though jumping the psychological hurdle of experiencing nude beaches can remain a challenge...

..I come from a family where modesty was a virtue, and was shocked when I moved to the Netherlands and found an open approach to public nudity. (I once saw a naked man in Amsterdam, riding his bike to work).

I felt outraged and insulted.

“Never, never in my life will I be naked in public,” I told myself. However, since then, some things have changed.

I became a nudist. My current boyfriend happens to be a nudist and on our first holiday he introduced me to the joy of being naked on the beach.

And I rather liked it.

Being naked on the beach gives you the feeling of being free and in union with nature. And it is rather natural, considering that humans only started to wear clothes 72,000 years ago. For more than half of our existence we have been nudists.

What I noticed at the nudist beaches is that people come in all shapes and forms, and rarely do they resemble Kate Moss. However, being natural with nature is not that easy nowadays. It is still a controversial issue. Some regard public nudity as exhibitionism. Others say that nudity sets a bad example for the children. In most states of the US, for a woman to be topless can result in a fine.

Woman are paradoxically bombarded by glossy magazines with pictures which depict thin, beautiful and mostly naked women. Even if you would like to be a nudist, you might avoid going to a nudist beach for the reason that your body doesn’t correspond to the beauty standard.

But curiously enough, what I noticed at the nudist beaches is that people there in all shapes and forms, and rarely do they resemble Kate Moss. It can be indeed a liberating experience, especially if you have some confidence issues.

I started my nudist experience when I considered myself slightly overweight, and it helped me to realize that human body is beautiful as it is. And I certainly recommend everyone try it at least once.

Here are some tips, which could come quite handy if you are ready to try it
yourself..."

The Terra Cotta Inn's competition

We have many self employed people that stay at our resort. Naturally, they're always fascinated by our business. One of the questions I always get is what is our biggest competition.

We are in the competition for guests vacation time. We are not a weekend getaway like most nudist parks, clubs, and resorts in the US. We cater to vacationers, which is why our guests come mainly from all over the US, Canada, England, and Australia. People are always amazed to hear that we book more room nights with guests from Washington, than we do guests from Southern California. And the same is true with guests from Canada.

In my opinion, to be successful, you have to deliver value, quality for the price you charge, and you have to be busy. You have to have other guests at your resort as most nudists are social and love to talk with other people.

However, that isn't always true. For instance, one couple said on tripadvisor that they liked their 3 night stay at another bigger nude place in Palm Springs. They wrote "we were litterally [sic] the only ones at the resort, except for a couple of stray cats." They further wrote they "Will definately [sic] go back but will probably wait till the summer season, as we love the heat and fewer crowds."

For instance, they would never be our customer as we are extremely popular and very busy all the time. As an example, we only have 2 empty rooms tomorrow night on Tuesday, where the other place will not be busy. On those rare occasions when people call saying they want to go to a nudist resort where no one else will be around, we always recommend that place. I feel it is better to have the reputation of being the popular place like us.

Our biggest nudist resort competition is non nudist owned places in Mexico and the Caribbean. Places like Couples and Sandals, Breezes, Grand Lido, etc. are our biggest competitors

Here in the western US, we really have no competition except ourselves. We are the only nudist resort that caters to vacationers and is busy 7 days a week. So most nudist couples that book 1-2 week long vacations (and like to talk with other people) always book our resort (unless we are full). Also nudists that want just a few days midweek always book us too.

So here in Palm Springs, our biggest competition is the town of Palm Springs itself. It is a fantastic city. The first time Mary Clare and I vacationed here, we fell in love with it. Mary Clare was born in Tampa, Florida. Her family moved to Chicago when she was young and we met at college.

We had gone to Florida for a few rainy vacations in our early 20's like most Midwesterners who don't know any better thinking Florida was the "sunshine state." Not realizing of course "sunshine state" was only a marketing slogan to convince uneducated people to vacation in Florida, the rainiest state in the nation.

In our mid 20's, we vacationed in Southern California and went to Palm Springs. We fell in love with the town. After we came once to Palm Springs, we never chose Florida again as a vacation choice (we did have to go for some family and business events though).

So what's our biggest competition in Palm Springs? People falling in love with our resort and the town of Palm Springs so much that they buy homes here. Well over 100 couples who used to book 1 and 2 week long vacations with us have now bought 2nd homes in Palm Springs and some have moved here to live and work. Where many guests used to vacation here, now they stay at their homes and come here for day use. That is why I am always marketing our resort.

Palm Springs is a fantastic city to live in and vacation in. Lonely Planet travel guide company listed Palm Springs as one of the worlds 10 cities you had to vacation at in 2008. It even said one of the reasons you had to vacation here was because of our clothing optional resort. Now that was cool.

We are Americans owning an American business. That is why I always say it is time for nudists to stop supporting big foreign owned, non nudist owned resorts and vacation here in the good old USA during this recession. Help our country. Help American nudists.

Now if you want to take a fun vacation, give us a call at The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa located in sunny Palm Springs, CA.

We are the most mainstream nudist resort in the US and are perfect for couples trying topless or nude sunbathing for the first time. You don't even have to be a nudist to vacation with us.

More people need to become aware of nude recreation choices in the US and Canada

The Bare Oaks Blog click here did a very good analysis as too why Glen Echo nudist Park outside of Toronto, Canada closed.

Here are some highlights from their blog:

...The fact is that I am sad that 54 years of naturist history is coming to such an abrupt end...

It has certainly generated a lot of press. See:

Toronto Star August 28
Metro News August 28
Toronto Sun August 29
CTV News September 2

From a business standpoint, the loss of a naturist park in the Toronto area is a bad thing. We are not in competition with each other. There are at least 400,000 people in the Greater Toronto Area, according to a survey by the Federation of Canadian Naturists, who are interested in naturism. If I add up all the clubs in the Toronto area, I only get to less than 5,000 members. Even if I assume that another 5,000 people are visitors and not members, that still leaves 390,000 people unaccounted for. If we assume a huge margin of error (which is unlikely given the methodology) I am still left wondering where the other 90,000 people are.

In my opinion, they are not visiting naturist clubs because of a lack of awareness. When I talk about Bare Oaks to my neighbours I frequently get a surprised reaction that "there are places like that in Ontario." ...If we managed to get another 10,000 people participating in naturism, we would all be completely overwhelmed!

...each club is truly unique. While we all share the naturist/nudist label, the application and interpretation of the philosophy varies greatly in each club. Some clubs offer a more urban experience while others are more nature-oriented. Some are passionately naturist while others are more clothing-optional."

The blog makes many good points. First is awareness. We got an e-mail from a couple who said they just got back to England after a 3 week long holiday in Palm Springs. They just learned that we were in Palm Springs and were so sad that they didn't know there were urban naturist resorts in the US. They thought they were only in Spain and France.

I spend so much time promoting nudism as does FCN and AANR, yet this couple didn't know nudist resorts exist in the US.

Sadly because marketing budgets are small in the nudist world, we don't have the marketing power that the big hotel chains have.

The Bare Oaks Blog says if they had another 10,000 people participating in Toronto, they would be overwhelmed. I figure if we had another 50 couples booking a week long stay, then I could afford to put a big flat screen TV in every room and not raise rates. That's just an additional 4 couples a month staying for a week.

I bust my butt on marketing our resort, but I know it's definitely not going to happen this year getting 4 additional couples a month. This year we probably have the highest occupancy rate of ALL hotels in Palm Springs, but it will probably be only our 2nd or 3rd best year of our 15 years in business. However, if next year we averaged an extra 4 couples per month booking rooms for a week or longer, then our guests would really be happy as we reinvest more money as a percent of sales in our resort than probably any other nudist resort in the US.

But, it sure would be nice though if 4 additional couples a month decided to support nudism in the US and stayed at our resort instead of supporting non nudist owned overpriced places in Mexico and the Caribbean.

Has AANR Become Outdated? Commentary by the AANR President

There are two major nudist organizations in the US. AANR which is the American Association for Nude Recreation and TNS, The Naturist Society.

I am on the AANR West board of directors http://aanrwest.org IMO, AANR in the last 10 years has done more for mainstreaming nude recreation than ever before, and more than any other organization. They have earned the expression the credible voice of nude recreation.

The President of AANR just wrote an article for Pasco Naturally newspaper. Here it is reprinted from AANR's blog:

"For the second time in 15 months, the AANR Board of Trustees voted to suspend the charter of a major club in Florida. The particulars were different, but both centered on the board’s feelings that the marketing practices of the clubs were contrary to our principles and standards related to sexual exploitation of the human body. In 2008, the issue was Caliente which invited swinger groups to sponsor “theme nights” at the resort and planned to sponsor a booth at “Swingfest.” This year it was Paradise Lakes which scheduled a “Miss G String” contest with non-nudist models and planned to air the event on the Playboy Channel under the theme “69 sexy things to do before you die.”

The AANR ruling documents provide that “A charter may be temporarily suspended by the President if charges are filed by the pertinent regional division or the suspension is approved by the board of trustees; such suspension to be effective until the next in-person meeting of the board of trustees.” Suspension is not a finding of guilt. It gives the association time to complete further investigation and gives club management time to develop an appeal before the charter is revoked. In both cases, club management decided to withdraw from AANR before the process could be completed.

Management of both clubs told me that economics were the reason for their decisions. They claim that traditional nudists do not spend the dollars on room rentals, meals and drinks that are necessary for the resort to be profitable. They need to reach another audience with the propensity to spend more money. I understand the problem. AANR, itself, has experienced a drop in membership as have nearly all membership organizations. As we manage our organizations, we need to adapt and do things differently in order to survive. However, we also need to step back and remember what we stand for.

In the past several years, AANR has been very successful in changing public perception about nude recreation. Major media outlets have featured nude recreation as a legitimate recreational choice. AANR has also been very successful in changing the viewpoint of elected officials and government agencies. We have differentiated ourselves from the adult business industry. We are being recognized as the credible voice of reason for nude recreation. The affiliation with AANR has enabled many clubs to get building permits, liquor licenses, and sometimes to be allowed to exist. That public trust cannot be jeopardized.

This past summer, AANR sponsored The AANR World Record Skinny-Dip. Club owners and beach organizers reported that many people participated who had never before been nude in mixed company. The press reports were the greatest we have ever seen for an event. Clubs signed up new members. The event portrayed wholesome family nude recreation. No one confused it with a strip show or a swinger convention. The event told me that, with focused marketing, our resorts and AANR can grow in membership without a sexual tone.

One of the resort owners told me that “the only thing acceptable to AANR is sitting on a log watching a campfire.” I think that most AANR members would disagree with that assessment. Times have certainly changed from the 1950s when I became involved as a child. We have more tolerance. But, most of us see that there is a line which should not be crossed if we are to be true to our brand and to the promises we gave to public officials. The AANR plaque on the wall of a club or participating business needs to stand for something. Sometimes we need to take a stand to enforce that.

I am sorry to lose two clubs with wonderful facilities which have provided a destination resort for many AANR members and potential members. My wife and I have visited both many times. I also feel for the members who have invested thousands of dollars to buy a condominium in a resort that has changed its image. My personal hope is that the management of these resorts re-examine their marketing strategy and agree to uphold the principles and standards of AANR.

After years of fighting for our right to exist, it’s a bit strange to hear from a club owner that we may be “outdated.” We walk a tough line between ultra-conservatives who would outlaw our clubs and the adult industry which wants to piggy-back on our success in bringing public acceptance. We know our niche and what it takes to protect our brand. And, we draw the line."

For AANR's Blog click http://aanr.blog.com

One of the most important sentences in this post is "Management of both clubs told me that economics were the reason for their decisions. They claim that traditional nudists do not spend the dollars on room rentals, meals and drinks that are necessary for the resort to be profitable."

Nudists only have themselves to blame for losing both Paradise Lakes and Caliente resort to becoming swinger and sexual oriented clubs. Every time a nudist vacationed in the Caribbean or Mexico at a non nudist owned naked place, it took money away from the real American nudist clubs. I bet, less than 20% of our business at Terra Cotta Inn comes from AANR and TNS members. Further I have found most AANR & TNS members only want to stay at our resort on weekends and go to the non nudist owned places in the Caribbean and Mexico for a week.

Nudists, if you want nice places in the US, WAKE UP!!! You have to vacation at them. STOP going to naked places in Mexico and the Caribbean that laugh in your face charging you sometimes over $100 a night more to stay on the "nude" side. Stop going to these places where to eat nude you have a hamburger shack, and the prude side has all the nice meal options. Otherwise, some day you will wake up and say, where did all the nice nudist resorts in the USA go? It's happening already.

AANR does a great job in supporting nudist rights in the US. You should also support them by belonging to this fine organization.

Now if you want to take a fun vacation, give us a call at The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa located in sunny Palm Springs, CA.

The senate passes another stupid bill that will hurt tourism

What are the scariest words in the English language? President Regan said they are we're from the federal government and we're here to help you. Well that's not true if you are a defense contractor or big oil as that is where the bulk of American welfare money is spent. They get LOTS of help from the federal government.

But if you are in a diversified industry like tourism that doesn't have the big bucks to pay off people in congress, then we are stuck with stupid laws that supposedly help our industry.

The latest is the Senate passing the Travel Promotion Act. Here congress sets up yet another bureaucracy to advertise vacationing in the US. Where everyone knows you normally get big paybacks from advertising tourism, our government proposes levying a tax on the people they are advertising too so they won't want to vacation here.

Now I know the senate is insulated from the real world, but you would think at least 1 or 2 senators might have a little common sense. You don't increase or create new taxes in a recession. That was learned in 1929 - DUH!!!

Here's the story:

"New Travel Promotion Act Aims to Boost U.S. Tourism

The Senate recently passed the Travel Promotion Act, a measure designed to promote the U.S. abroad...The Act stipulates that a new Corporation for Travel Promotion, funded by the government and private sector, will oversee those tasks.

Seems innocuous, even bland, doesn't it? But the devil is in the details in this case, specifically in the government's portion of the funding. This money would come from a $10 fee imposed on visitors from countries...The private sector will match each $10 fee paid.

Not surprisingly, the fee isn't sitting well with many in Europe, and the Daily Mail reports the E.U. is considering retaliation. "Only in 'Alice in Wonderland' could a penalty be seen as promoting the activity on which it is imposed," the European Commission's Ambassador to Washington, John Bruton, said Friday.

...But funding a program designed to attract foreign travelers by charging the very visitors it hopes to attract? That seems downright silly to me, especially if it leads individual European countries or, worse, the entire E.U., to impose fees on American travelers."

Tickets for nudity at San Onofre?

California Parks Department says tickets for nudity are imminent at San Onofre State Beach, despite current court order requiring adherence to the Cahill Policy as it existed last August.

DATE: July 21, 2009
SUBJECT: California Advisory
TO: All naturists and other concerned citizens

Dear Naturist,

This is an advisory from the Naturist Action Committee (NAC) concerning an important situation in the state of California.

Responding to a request from legal counsel for the California Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR), the California Court of Appeal for the 4th District has published the previously unpublished ruling it rendered last month in the San Onofre State Beach case. The recent appellate ruling overturned a 2008 Superior Court victory by the Naturist Action Committee and Friends of San Onofre Beach, a local naturist group.

At issue is whether DPR has followed proper procedure in abruptly ending the application of the Cahill/Harrison regulation at San Onofre State Beach. Cahill/Harrison is long-standing and well-known means for managing and regulating the clothing-optional use of portions of state parks.

The unpublished ruling applied only to San Onofre State Beach. However, publication gives the ruling greater precedential effect and allows the possibility that rangers may ignore the Cahill policy and may begin issuing citations for nudity at other state parks under Title 14, Section 4322 of the California Code of Regulations.

CAHILL

It has been suggested by some that the Cahill Policy has remained in effect throughout the years entirely through the good will of the California Parks Department. If that has been so, then the good will ended in May, 2008, when Parks Director Ruth Coleman singled out San Onofre State Beach and said, "Cahill does not apply there."

From that moment, the Cahill Policy became badly damaged goods. If it could be terminated abruptly and without appropriate process or public involvement at one state park, then it could happen at any state park, at any time. So much for good will.

Trusting the good will of public officials for something as important as protection from arrest for benign behavior has never been an intelligent choice. Relying on that same promise of good will after the trust has been publicly and intentionally broken is simply folly.

CHOICES

Confronted with the crippling damage dealt to the Cahill Policy at San Onofre, the Naturist Action Committee faced a basic choice. It could accept the loss of San Onofre, it could negotiate, or it could fight.

When the Parks Department refused to negotiate, NAC chose to fight.

NAC did not, and does not, look on the Cahill/Harrison regulation as a matter of good will. It’s a regulation, and it has been used exactly as regulation by each successive administration of the California Parks Department for THIRTY YEARS.

The Superior Court accepted NAC's contention that Cahill/Harrison is a regulation. The Court of Appeal recognized it as a regulation, too, though its different view concerning quality and extent were what allowed the reversal of the Superior Court’s procedural requirements for undoing the regulation.

NAC's legal challenge to DPR’s arbitrary destruction of Cahill at San Onofre did not cripple Cahill. That damage quite clearly had already been inflicted. Trusting "good will" while waiting for the next shoe to drop will NOT restore the damaged Cahill Policy. And at NO point has it EVER been true that accepting the loss of San Onofre will somehow inoculate naturists against the similar loss of another California beach or another California state park.

TICKETS?

DPR spokespersons have given conflicting information. One predicted that the Department would "tread lightly" on the matter of citations for nudity in state parks. Referring to San Onofre, another has said that no action was planned until at least after Labor Day. The truth is that there's really no way to know for sure.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Later this week, the Naturist Action Committee will file its petition to have the case heard by the California Supreme Court.

NAC will continue to issue Action Alerts, Advisories and Updates on this issue as circumstances require. Look for them.

It will be a shame if San Onofre can no longer be used as a nude beach.

Burning Man's photography rules criticized

Burning Man's popularity continues to grow. About 50,000 attend every year. We have had guests attend it and tellus all about it. We would like to go some year, but our resort is always so popular it is hard to getaway.

One of the biggest fears among nudists is having their pictures taken and having them appear on porn sites. Now in my opinion that is nothing compared to a teacher for instance having a nude picture taken appearing at Burning Man or a nude beach, having someone find it and report it to their school district. Many people can still lose their jobs for having nude pictures on the web. Sadly nudists are still discriminated against.

Here's the story:

"Burning Man criticized for rules, says protection needed

Organizers of the popular Burning Man festival are facing criticism for new rules on photography for the clothing-optional event. Organizers claim the rules will protect participants by preventing nude pictures being posted on porn sites.

The annual private art event that runs for seven days always ends with the burning of an effigy, hence the name for the festival...The clothing-optional event has always tried to protect participants from opportunists, and last year Burning Man (BMO) was able to have five sites remove pictures taken at Burning Man. A Burning Man representative said that three of those sites were porn sites. The stance taken by organizers of the festival, which draws about 48,000 people, has been criticized by the U.S. Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). The EFF works to defend free speech on the internet, to protect individual's privacy and consumer rights...

EFF's position came about after Burning Man organizers announced new rules in August. The rules let the BMO hold the copyright for images that BMO participants might post on social networking sites or third party sites. These rules enable BMO to have sites that fall under the definition remove unapproved images. BMO has responded that it is simply trying to protect participants, who may not want the world to know what they did for their summer holiday..."

One of the issues here is the expectation of privacy. Burning Man is open to the public like a nude beach. People wander around with cameras. There should be no expectation of privacy there. If you don't want you photo snapped in the nude, don't go to a nude beach or burning man nude.

That is one of the major advantages of nudist resorts. Guest safety. NO ONE walks around with cameras at nudist resorts. Now that sad, many guests want vacation pictures. At our resort, we always accommodate them by taking their pictures. That way they can have nude vacation photos and no cameras are outside.

Bottom line is if you are worried about your job if a nude photo of you appears, don't go to a nude beach or Burning Man.

Is the reason more people aren't flying, because it isn't fun anymore?

Airfarewatchdog.com is a great site. It lists the best airfare sales anywhere on the net. They also list "unlisted" sales that airlines may post on their sites for certain routes instead of general airfare sales.

Today on Facebook, airfare watchdog wrote they feel one of the reasons people are not flying more is it is no longer fun to fly. Here is what they wrote:

"Airfarewatchdog: It's our contention that even though fares are pretty reasonable, the reason that airlines aren't getting more people in planes is because flying isn't fun anymore. People are voting with their feet, and putting them on their gas pedal...s."

I have seen this even in or business. We are having more Canadians, Pacific Northwest guests, and midwesterners drive here then ever before. Part of the reason they give is it is such a hassle to fly nowadays.

Now, we still have lots of guests fly here because they want to vacation with us and flying saves the most amount of time. But, I bet one of the reasons the textile chain hotels are suffering low occupancy rates is there never was anything special about staying at a textile hotel, and with the inconvenience of flying, why bother any more.

This is a lesson for nudist resorts. If you don't make your resort fun, people will stop going too! People want fun more than ever especially in this economy.

Now if you want to take a fun vacation, give us a call at The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa located in sunny Palm Springs, CA.

Nude Recreation is Fun writes Chris Elliott

Erich Schuttauf, the executive director of AANR, the American Association for Nude Recreation is featured in an interview with Chris Elliott. Chris writes for National Geographic Traveller and MSNBC.com. He is a very influential travel writer.

Earlier this week I wrote that nudists need to get across the point that nude recreation and nudism is fun.

So what's the headline of this article? "Nude Recreation is fun."

Now as much as I would like to take some credit for it, Erich Schuttauf is a very savvy director. He also preaches that nude recreation is fun.

Way to go Erich. You make me and ll other AANR members proud!

Here's the story:

“Nude recreation is fun”

Erich Schuttauf is the executive director of the American Association for Nude Recreation, a group that represents clothing-optional resorts. There’s been a lot of talk about nudism in the travel world lately, from two highly-publicized incidents this summer in which disruptive airline passengers disrobed, to the group’s efforts to coin a new term: the “nakation.” That’s right, folks. AANR has trademarked the word. Do nudists have an image problem? I asked Schuttauf...

[Chris]While we’re on the subject of image, I wanted to ask you about Paradise Lakes Resort in Florida, which withdrew from your association after being temporarily suspended for violating what have been termed “family-friendly” principles. Do nudists have an image to uphold, and if so, what is it?

[Erich] Behavior within the nudist community should require no apology. We have earned a reputation as the credible voice of reason for family social nude recreation since 1931 and take that reputation very seriously.

[Chris]Section 1.4 of the AANR procedure manual says “it is important that we maintain the highest standards of courtesy, dignity, and personal integrity.” Call me a prude, but I think there are a lot of Americans who think the words “nudism” and “dignity” — let alone “personal integrity” don’t belong in the same sentence. Am I missing something?

[Erich] Those who have not given nude recreation a try are definitely missing out on something: the level of body acceptance and personal comfort that comes with allowing yourself and others to be who you are. We often say it but a visitor to a nudist club doesn’t know a bank president from a bus driver. Likewise, those with scars or a few pounds to lose find self-confidence. Its about body acceptance rather than bodies...

[Chris] The latest Y Partnership 2009 National Leisure Travel Monitor finds that interest in nude recreation slipped from 11 percent in 2008 to 10 percent this year. In the interests of full disclosure, I should also mention the Y Partnership is your public relations firm. Are you concerned that your popularity has peaked?

[Erich]Reviewing the entire study the traveling public’s interest in virtually all activities has dropped a little bit. I attribute this to the fact there are even more and more choices of things to do. And, relative to many widely popular activities, nude recreation is doing very well. [Tom's note. Chris, get real, it's the worst recession since the great depression. That's fantastic numbers.]

[Chris] Speaking of your PR firm, I understand it coined the term “nakation.” That’s very clever. What do you think of that term?

[Erich] A nakation is a vacation you will want to brag to friends about. I love the term chiefly because it’s so much fun. Anyone who has ever gone skinny-dipping or as a kid romped through the back yard sprinkler in their birthday suit knows. Nude recreation is fun.

[Chris]I can’t help but notice surveys like TripAdvisor’s “5 naked events and top 5 nude beaches,” which, if you don’t mind me saying so, seem a little exploitative. Come to think of it, there are some who will think this interview is just a shameless attempt to attract visitors. Where do you cross the line between legitimate journalism and a titillating ratings grab?

{Erich] We’re more than willing to have a little bit of fun in the media if it means having an opportunity to let others know about where they can experience the joys of going clothes-free. For example, in July we convinced members and first-time visitors alike to give swimming in the buff a try as we set a Guinness World Record for the most number of people simultaneously skinny dipping. We’re talking about 13,648 people in more than 100 locations throughout North America shedding clothes.

On the other hand the importance of maintaining credibility means that we’re committed to striking a balance. Nude recreation is a lot of fun to experience and to talk about, but only if we can be a good neighbor as we do so..."

This is a great article. Erich talks about the wholesomeness of nudism. He talks about the body acceptance and confidence building of nudism. But, he also talks about the FUN. And that is what Chris Elliott picked up on is the FUN.

Way to go Erich and Chris. A great interview!

Dear Abby writes give nudism a try!

This post should be re posted everywhere on the net. It is very positive news for nude recreation and nudism.

Dear Abby is considered a major authority of personal advice. She is know for giving sound conservative advice. I bet the letter below will help many men convince their wife or girlfriend to try a vacation at a nudist resort or to even go nude sunbathing in their own back yard. Dear Abby says "the naturalist [it is cute who she made a common media spelling error] lifestyle is healthy and upbeat, so give it a try."

Here's the letter to Dear Abby:

Dear Abby
Wife Shies Away From Man's Embrace Of Nudist's Lifestyle

DEAR ABBY: My husband, "Adam," and I bought a lovely, secluded home in the country... Now it seems like my husband plans to spend the rest of his life in the nude. He loves it and often tells me how "relaxing" it feels. I must admit his temperament has improved.

...He works in the yard, cuts the grass, hikes in our woods naked -- and has a head-to-toe golden tan.

...My problem is, Adam is constantly after me to join him. I admire his nerve, but just can't bring myself to go outdoors with nothing on... My biggest hang-up is fear of getting caught...

Should I give in to Adam's request and give his nude lifestyle a try?...I told him I'd follow your advice. -- "EVE" IN UPSTATE NEW YORK

DEAR "EVE": I'm not opposed to it. From everything I have read, and from readers' testimonials, the naturalist lifestyle is healthy and upbeat, so give it a try. Just be sure to wear sunscreen..."

Fear is the biggest reason more people especially women do not try nude recreation. Fear of the unknown, fear they will meet someone they know at a nudist resort, fear that they won't "measure up," etc. Sadly many people let fear take over their lives, so much, they don't have as much fun in life as they could be having.

Here the woman admits how when her husband is nude, he has a better temperament. It is so true. Vacationing or living nude is one of the best feelings in the world.

Dear Abby, THANK YOU for telling Eve that she should give naturism a try. I am sure she will love it.

And Dear Abby, I know you come to Palm Springs from time to time. Feel free to stop on by. We will be happy to show you our resort. I bet you will love nude sunbathing too.

Now if you want to take a fun nude vacation (especially since Dear Abby says give it a try), give us a call at The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa located in sunny Palm Springs, CA.
