Nudism and Social Media Marketing

It's an honor for me to be on both the AANR West http://aanrwest.org PR team and the national AANR http://aanr.com PR teams.

Public relations and marketing are the name of the game in the long term success of AANR, nudist resorts, and nude recreation in America.

The advantage of public relations and social media marketing is you have other people not related to AANR or nudist resorts legitimizing nude recreation. However, it's our job in AANR and owning nudist resorts to spark the media's and people's interest in nude recreation.

This summer, AANR and nude recreation in general have received lots of positive press from the Guinness world record skinny dip. It was covered by CNN, MSNBC, WGN, local ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox affiliates. Also many local newspapers. It was looked upon as a fun event.

Then in August http://Tripadvisor.com came out with a survey of 22,000 Americans where 48% said that they would bare all at a nude beach, up from 31% last year. In a CNBC poll of 10,000 people, 52% said yes, they would take a naked vacation. And KTLA, a Los Angeles CW TV station had a poll of 2500 people, where 63% of respondents said women should be allowed to topless sunbathe on California beaches.

On August 12th, the USA Today newspaper reported "Staycations are so 2009. It's nakations in 2010." This did not happen just by coincidence where the reporter woke up one day and said to herself, "I'm going to write a story about nude recreation. No, this story happened because of a long term commitment that AANR, the AANR regional organizations, and Ypartnership have made to positively promote nude recreation.

AANR pays Ypartnership for their public relations work. The regional AANR organizations do not have the financial resources to pay Ypartnership. That's where social media marketing comes into play. We can create positive buzz ourselves about nakations and nude recreation.

I"m going to give everyone my advice on how to create positive pr for their regions or for nudist resort owners. Of course this is my opinion, but I have found that it has worked for me. Keep in mind this area changes all the time. So todays strategy may not work tomorrow.

We only have so much time in our lives. I am going to cover the big FIVE things to do in social media marketing. Depending on your time and interest, branch out to the other areas.

#1) Create a blog! I've been blogging for 4 years. The 3 main blogging softwares out there are http://blogger.com this is the blogspot software that Google owns. I use blogspot. It is the easiest to use, but is also the most limited as far as bells and whistles are concerned. It's free. http://wordpress.com and http://typepad.com are other popular blogging softwares.

With blogspot.com it is very simple. Your posts after a while will get permanently indexed by google and also yahoo. The more you blog, the more traffic you bring in and the more people learn about nude recreation.

Blogspot allows 2 types of blogs, 1 for general viewing, the other 18+ with nudity.

Here's the URL's for my blog: http://theterracottainn.blogspot.com No nudity
http://terracottainn.blogspot.com Has nudity. I recommend everyone create 2 blogs, one nude, one not.

As you look over my blog, you will see how I've commented on nakations, the surveys by CNBC, etc. I highly recommend blogging!

Here's some example posts about nakations: CLICK HERE

#2 Get a Facebook page. Facebook just reached the 500 million member mark this July. It is said 50% of ALL users log on once a day. Facebook and Google battle it our #1 and #2 for sheer number of visitors each day. Facebook wins for time spent of the site, Google wins for number of searchers.

Terra Cotta Inn has a facebook page at: http://bit.ly/TerraCottaInnFBPage

AANR, AANR West, and AANR East also have facebook pages.

Be actively involved with posting information to your Facebook page to generate interest. NO Nudity is allowed on Facebook.

#3 Video! People want to be entertained. The big site here is http://youtube.com Also http://vimeo.com is popular. Where youtube is the 4th most popular site in the world, vimeo is in the top 125. Vimeo however does not allow commercial videos, so it is perfect for talking about the fun of nude sunbathing and nude recreation in general not about specific nudist resorts. Try to make your videos informal and personal, like you're talking with a friend. Funny really helps too. There can be NO nudity on Youtube.

Buy a cheap Flip video recorder and a tripod and start shooting. Try not to sound too boring like me :-) I did an example here of an infomercial about nakations. I suggest that you try to show how much fun nude recreation really is. That of course is not the easiest thing to do, so good luck.

#4 Microblogging - Here the big site is http://twitter.com I've been tweeting for 2 years. Here's our account http://twitter.com/nudist_resorts It's a great way to get information out. AANR West's twitter site is
http://twitter.com/aanrwest I have done links to sites with nudity on twitter. I just tell readers "contains nudity." So far no problems.

#5 Sign up for google alerts at http://www.google.com/alerts?hl=en You put in key words like AANR, nudists, nudism, etc. and any time there is a news story or recent post about it, you will learn about it. Sometimes you can even make positive comments like I did at CNBC. You can see my comment here on this story under the user name tcotta: CLICK HERE

Other social media sites and strategies in no particular order.

#6 Press releases. When you have something newsworthy, put it out in a press release. That's what Ypartnership does for AANR. I have used http://pr.com Here is an example of a recent press release I published for my resort: CLICK HERE

#7 My Space http://myspace.com until a few years ago, before facebook came on strong, myspace was all the rage, now it's Facebook. Myspace is still popular especially with music and art. However 35% of myspace members are age 17 and younger, whereas 18% of facebook members are that young. And 24 and younger members are 42% for myspace vs. only 24% for Facebook which is why I recommend Facebook if you have limited time resources.

#8 Linked in http://linkedin.com has 75 million professionals. It's a great way to find people to help your business. I have not used it yet, but, I bet it can be useful. Only 5% of members are 24 and younger.

#9 Tagging Sites like digg, reddit, newsvine, delicious, furl, stumbleupon simpy, and 465 other tagging sites can bring traffic. The only one I use is http://stumbleupon.com If you use it, you will have a tool bar on your computer as you have to download free software from their site. You should "I Like It" to everyone of your posts. I find that by doing this you will get an extra 10 to 100's of visitors to your site each post depending upon what you "like." This will also have residual value of people who will "Stumble Upon" your liked posts.

#10 http://friendfeed.com This is like facebook and growing. It is now in the top 1000 sites of the world

#11 Photo sharing- This is good. you have sites like http://tumblr.com Which is like a photo blog (allows nudity), photobucket (no nudity) webshots (no nudity), and flickr which allows nudity but nothing promoting businesses or organizations

#12 Podcasting You can start your own radio station or all talk stations at http://blip.fm

#13 Discussion boards and forums. There are many nudist forums out there. Some of the more popular ones are: http://truenudists.com , http://nudist-resorts.org http://clothesfree.com http://traveltalkonline.com and http://skinbook.ning.com You can make comments on these boards.

#14 Article publishing A great way to get the word out is article publishing. The big site is http://ezinearticles.com Also important sites are http://ideamarketers.com http://ehow.com and yahoo groups Here at Terra Cotta Inn, we've had a yahoo group for about 5 years. Here is our URL http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FriendsofTheTerraCottaInn/

I hope this helps everyone. If you have questions, feel free calling me.
