Modernism Week, Palm Springs, CA Runs February 16th - 26th

South Beach has it's Art Deco buildings. Chicago has it's magnificent skyline. San Francisco has their Painted Ladies. And Palm Springs, California is famous for mid-century modern architecture. Nude sunbathers are extremely lucky as they get to stay at one of the most famous Mid-Century Modern designed hotels in the US, The Terra Cotta Inn.

There were many modernist architects in the 1950's and 1960's, but one of the most famous is Albert Frey. He only designed a few hotels in the Palm Springs area, but his most famous is our small resort. Albert Frey is considered the father of desert modernism.

Above is a photo of Mary Clare and Albert Frey in front of our hotel shortly after we bought it in 1994. Mr. Frey called us as he saw an article about our resort in our local newspaper and he immediately recognized it as the hotel he designed which was originally called The Monkey Tree.

The Monkey Tree was built for celebrities. That's why we have large rooms (300-500 square ft) and why we were built with very high walls to protect the privacy of the celebrities that stayed here. We have learned that Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Desi & Lucy, Spencer Tracy, President Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and many other famous celebrities used to stay here. To this day, we still get some celebrities from time to time.

What is cool is we chatted with Albert Frey for a few hours where he told us he came up with the slanted roof line design to be in synergy with the slope of the San Jacinto mountains. Another thing he told us is he has always been a nudist at heart, (he was Swiss). When he was young, he used to go to Ile du Levant which is in the Mediterranean and was one of the very first organized nudist destinations in the world. Albert Frey was so proud that one of his hotels became a famous nudist resort.

Modernism Week is almost over - However, nudists can stay anytime at the Terra Cotta Inn

All week long Palm Springs has been celebrating modernism week. http://www.modernismweek.com/ A few years back I went to the Palm Springs Modernism Committee and asked them why they never list The Terra Cotta Inn as one of the famous mid-century modern properties in palm Springs. I got a nose up in the air and a committee member very condescendingly said "honey, this is family friendly event, we would N-E-V-E-R mention your place because you are N-U-D-I-S-T-S." When he snidely said nudists, it sounded as if he was going to gag having to say that word.

Thus, visitors to Palm Springs Modernism Week would be sad to know that Albert Frey's most favorite hotel doesn't even exist in the committees small minds.

Now in all fairness, we have been treated extremely well in Palm Springs by almost everyone. I am a past President of the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce, I work well with Palm Springs tourism, we have had very good stories in our local newspaper and TV, I was on The Palm Springs City Council's Citizen Finance Committee for 2 years, and was a campaign treasurer for one of our city council members. This December in palm Springs Life Magazine's Best of the Best issue we were picked as the BEST boutique hotel in the whole Palm Springs area. I could not ask for a more friendly community. Albert Frey would be proud of us.

But, sadly I have never been able to break into the little Palm Springs Modernism clique. They obviously do not really care about history, or only their version of it!

Fox TV writes about National Go Topless Day to be held Sunday, August 26th

Most Americans confuse the rights of women to go topless wherever a man can go shirtless with modesty instead of fashion.

Back in the 1700's, it was very fashionable for nobility in Europe to have their breasts completely exposed when going to balls. Then came Victorian prudishness, where a woman showing a bare ankle was considered showing too much flesh and was a society no no.

Men in the US until the 1930's could be arrested for being bare chested at the beach. Why do we subject American women to this same repression? Here's a photo showing what it was like on American beaches back in the early 1900's.

The purpose of Go Topless Day is equality. It is acceptable for women to be topless wherever men go shirtless in much of Europe, why not in the US?

Women, once you go topless sunbathing, you will never want to wear a ill fitting bathing suit top again. We support this movement. Good luck everyone!

Fox TV reported on this event to be held this Sunday August 22nd. Of course all of our guests will be celebrating it as everyday of the year is Go Topless day here at The Terra Cotta Inn located in sunny Palm Springs, California.

Sunday is "Go Topless" Day, with women (and men) gathering in U.S. cities to advance a woman's right to go shirtless, just like men.

"As long as men can be topless, constitutionally women should have the same right, or men should also be forced to wear something hiding their chest," Maitreya, Rael, "spiritual leader" and founder of Go Topless , the group behind Sunday's annual event, says on the group's website...

The annual event is held on the Sunday nearest to Aug. 26, the date in 1920 when the U.S. Constitution was amended to grant women the right to vote. Also, Congress in 1970 declared Aug. 26 "Women's Equality Day."

Major cities taking part include: San Francisco; New York; Austin, Texas ; Los Angeles; Denver; Seattle; Miami, and Chicago ...

For supporters of the topless cause, a woman's breasts should not be treated any different than her legs, belly button or other body parts than can be exposed without hassle.

"It's a matter of fairness," Go Topless director Nadine Gary told AOL News . "We want equal topless rights for all or none." ...

She said the goal is also to establish clarity in what's allowed. Gary noted that a woman arrested in New York for going topless in public was later awarded $29,000 for wrongful arrest...

No nudity at this years Bay to Breakers run sponsor says - Just say no to ING

Leave it to a big impersonal corporation to ruin all the fun. ING is a sponsor of this years Bay to Breakers fun run. They have said they will have zero tolerance for alcohol and nudity at the race.

I almost wish I had an ING account. That way I could close it and tell them because of their closed minded corporate sensibilities, until they realize Bay to Breakers is a celebration of life, not squashing the life and fun out of this event, I will not do business with them. If you have an ING account, I encourage you to close it in protest.

"Clothes, sobriety required for Bay to Breakers

SAN FRANCISCO—Organizers of San Francisco's annual Bay to Breakers 12K race—famous for contestants in wacky costumes, or no costume at all—want the event to be a little less racy this year.
In a statement announcing the May 17 event, race sponsor ING said it would have a "zero tolerance policy" on alcohol. Wheeled objects and nudity also won't be allowed, organizers said.

The 97-year-old footrace draws thousands of participants...

Last year, neighbors complained loudly of a shortage of trash bins and portable toilets.

Race spokeswoman Danielle Clark says the policies mainly enforce existing laws and aren't intended to squash the festiveness of the event...

"We're not taking the fun out of the race," Clark said. "We're just implementing a few small policies to make sure it's a fun and safe race.'"

Implementing a "few small policies." Give me a break. They are radically changing Bay to Breakers.

This is my advice. If you have an ING account close it and tell them you will not do business with them until they change their policy towards Bay to Breakers. If the police have had no problems with nudes running in the race, why should ING?

Next, if they persist in this childishness towards nudity in Bay to Breakers march in the race with protest signs making fun of ING. If they want to take away the fun of Bay to Breakers, make sure that they don't profit from their ill conceived policies. Contact the press before hand so they know of your protest.

And ING, since you do appear to be "full of it" add more toilets and trash containers along the race route.

I have already reported on how vacationing at clothing optional and nudist resorts is one of the popular items on peoples bucket lists or things to do before they die.
