Common sense about teen sexting

Leave it to governments to not show common sense. Many teens these days are sexting. I think I read that somewhere around 20-25% of teens have sent or received nude photos of fellow students.

Now what do school officials and district attorneys do when they learn about this? Many of them go ballistic and charge the kids with felony child pornography. Instead of telling the parents, taking away the cell phones and making the kids do public service work on weekends to break them of this habit, officials who are supposed to be looking out for the welfare of our kids, want to throw the book at them instead.

In an earlier post, I said it was time for jury nullification on this issue. Our founding fathers inherently knew that governments lack common sense. So juries are made up of citizens. One of their jobs is to determine is their really a crime committed. The last time jury nullification was in its height was during prohibition. I suggested anyone on a sexting case find all kids not guilty as the only crime committed is one of rgwue stupidity.

Now there is some more common sense on this issue:

Cell Phone A new report says kids and teens should not face child pornography charges from sexting.

Researchers say, while this practice of sexting can have serious consequences, technology changes things for young people, and a distinction should be made between pornography and nudity.

This congress brings together 8-thousand researchers around the world to discuss social trends.

A previous report from a US Family Planning Organization found one in five children has participated in sexting.

The researchers say, to some, it's considered a harmless practice, and safer than intimacy, where pregnancy or std's might result...."
