Nudist resorts, weight, and self esteem

If we had a dollar for every time we have heard, "I would love to go to your nudist resort, but can't until I lose ___ pounds," we would be multi millionaires.

We tell people, guests of all weights and sizes vacation at nudist resorts. It is the best way to make you feel comfortable with your body and yourself.

Now the New York Times magazine has an article saying the same thing. Be happy with yourself no matter what your weight.

Here is the article:

"Losing the Weight Stigma

The public-health crusade of the moment is a no-holds-barred war on obesity. Those waging it don’t have time for subtlety. When Senator Christopher Dodd introduced the Obesity Prevention Act of 2008 this summer, he called obesity “a medical emergency of hurricanelike proportions” that is wreaking havoc “on our families, on our society and on our health care system.”

some activists and academics, part of a growing social movement known as fat acceptance, suggest that we rethink this war — as well as our definition of health itself. Fat-acceptance activists insist you can’t assume someone is unhealthy just because he’s fat, any more than you can assume someone is healthy just because he’s slim. (They deliberately use the word “fat” as a way to reclaim it, much the way some gay rights activists use the word “queer.”) Rather, they say, we should focus on health measurements that are more meaningful than numbers on a scale. This viewpoint received a boost in August when The Archives of Internal Medicine reported that fully half of overweight adults and one-third of the obese had normal blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar — indicating a normal risk for heart disease and diabetes, conditions supposedly caused by being fat.

This is a core argument of fat acceptance: that it’s possible to be healthy no matter how fat you are and that weight loss as a goal is futile, unnecessary and counterproductive — and that fatness is nobody’s business but your own.

Many fat-acceptance activists prefer a new approach to dieting that focuses on nutrition, exercise and body image... It encourages exercise, but for its emotional and physical benefits, not as a way to lose weight. It advocates tossing out the bathroom scale and loving your body no matter what it weighs.

The philosophy is migrating slowly into mainstream programs, like a spa in Vermont that focuses on “acceptance of ourselves and our wonderful sizes...."

Terra Cotta Inn's 14th Anniversary

Yesterday, December 19th was the 14th anniversary of our opening of The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa.

It has been a fun 14 years. We have met guests from 67 different countries since we opened.

It is lots of fun getting to meet all the interesting guests. We have lots to be thankful for.

This year, we were featured in the book Clothing Optional and Other Ways to Read this Book by Alan Zweibel. The book has received great reviews from Dave Barry, Martin Short, Larry David, Rob Reiner, Eric Idle, Steve Martin and more famous celebrities.

In July, tripadvisor.com picked us as one of the 10 best clothing optional resorts in the world. In October, the Vancouver Sun newspaper in Canada picked us as one of the best places in the world to go nude sunbathing.

We are still considered the best nudist resort for couples vacationing in the western US.

We are also considered the most mainstream nudist resort in America and perfect for couples trying nude sunbathing for the first time.

So if you have always wanted to try topless or nude sunbathing, give us a call at 800-786-6938. Visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com

Luann comics feature clothing optional resorts

I would like to thank AANR for pointing out the comic strip Luann (which isn't in our local paper) has a week long strip about vacationing at nudist resorts. They call it a nudist resort, nudist colony, and clothing optional during different days of the strip.

Here is the link:
http://comics.com/luann/2008-12-12/

Nudism is becoming more mainstream when comic strips start mentioning vacations at clothing optional resorts. This is great pr.

The only negative I see is they mentioned the nudist resort is in Costa Rica instead of the US. Here in the US there are so many great affordable nudist resorts to vacation at, but unfortunately so many people think, unless you over pay for a vacation out of the country, it isn't considered exotic.

Now if you have always wanted to try topless or nude sunbathing, give us a call at 800-786-6938. Visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com

Palm Springs Film Festival lineup for Jan 8-19th

This is the 20th anniversary of the Palm Springs International film festival. We have lots of guests who stay at our resort, nude sunbathe during the say and see the movies at night.

What is so much fun about the Palm Springs film festival is you actually hav a chance to see celebrities. The film festival kicks off Oscar season where celebrities will be chatting with academy members trying to get their votes of nominations and awards. Thus, many celebrities mingle with the movie goers.

It is lots of fun. You definately need to take a vacation here in sunny Palm Springs for this fun event.

Here's the lineup:

"Palm Springs International Film Festival announces 2009 lineup

The 20th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival will screen 210 films from 73 nations Jan. 8-19, it was announced today.

The screenings include 77 premieres — 14 world, 48 U.S. and 16 North American. Also, 50 of the 67 films submitted for Best Foreign Language Film Oscars will be screened.

The festival will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 6 with the annual Awards Gala...

The Joel Hopkins film about a struggling New York jingles writer and a lonely British bureaucrat stars Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, who each received Golden Globe acting nominations in the music or comedy categories.

“Over the course of its first 19 years, this Festival has always celebrated creative expression and embraced a diversity of visions and viewpoints,” said Festival Director Darryl Macdonald. “Happily, we are reaching our 20th anniversary milestone at a time when a new generation of filmmaking talent is making its debut on the world stage, with about one-third of this year’s film selections by first or second-time directors. Just as this year’s line-up brings the promise of new voices to infuse the cinema with a renewal of its creative energy, the Festival itself is undergoing a reincarnation of sorts, with new staff, a fresh sense of purpose where the industry is concerned, and a clear eye to the future of the art form.”...

GALA SCREENINGS:

In addition to the Opening Night Gala, the festival will hold four international galas with special screenings celebrating festival programming showcases, including:
20th Anniversary Gala: “$5 a Day” (U.S.). Marking its U.S. premiere, the film is a tale of a son forced to reunite with his con-artist father during a cross-country odyssey. Directed by Nigel Cole, it stars Christopher Walken, Allesandro Nivolo, Amanda Peet and Sharon Stone.

Gala: “Alien Trespass” (U.S.). A world premiere, directed by R.W. Goodwin and starring Eric McCormack, Jenni Baird, Dan Lauria and Robert Patrick. Set in 1957, a fiery object from space hurtles into a California desert mountaintop. A murderous creature — the Ghota, bent on destroying all life forms on the planet — escapes from the flying saucer. A benevolent alien, Urp, inhabits the body of Ted Lewis (Eric McCormack) — a local astronomer — and with the help of Tammy, a waitress from the local diner, sets out to save mankind.

The Gay!La: “Chef’s Special” (Spain). Directed by Nacho Velilla, a cook ditches dreams of Michelin stardom to manage a small barrio eatery. Javier Cámara, Lola Dueñas, Fernando Terjero and Benjamin Vicuña star.
Closing Night Film: “The Burning Plain” (U.S.). A U.S. premiere and directorial debut of award-winning screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga is the layered story of a self-destructive woman and two intertwined families. The film stars Charlize Theron, Kim Basinger, Jennifer Lawrence and Joaquim de Almeida.

PREMIERES:
The festival will offer 77 premieres of highly anticipated films showcasing the diversity of international cinema...

AWARDS BUZZ:

As part of the Awards Buzz program, a special jury of international film critics will review the 50 Oscar submissions being screened to award the FIPRESCI Award for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, Best Actor and Best Actress.
The FIPRESCI jury will include Peter Keough (U.S.), Lisa Nesselson (France) and Roger Clarke (UK)...

Fear of pictures on the net is one reason we don't have more young Americans in nudism

This summary is not available. Please click here to view the post.

Desire Resort in Los Cabos no longer clothing optional

I just learned today that Desire in Los Cabos in February will no longer be a nudist resort. (Or even a lifestyles resort which is what they also catered too lately). It is now going to just be a topless joint.

It is a tough market out there for nudist resorts. Although we will be up round 3% this year, most nudist resort owners I have talked with are down on occupancy this year. Some significantly.

The reason I think we are up on occupancy while most other places are down is we are one of the few nudist resorts in the US that caters to vacationers. Our guests come from around the world. Although they are mainly English speaking from the US, Canada, England, and Australia. Most American nudist resorts especially here in California are mainly just weekend getaways for locals instead of true vacation resorts that are busy all the time like us.

Our guests are deciding whether to go to Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Tahiti, our resort Terra Cotta Inn, etc. for their vacations. So when the economy goes bad, they stop going overseas and vacation American with us as we are the BEST VALUE nudist vacation resort in the world. Also we have been nudists for over 30 years and most nudist resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico are owned by non nudist corporations.

In talking to guests I have found that they are tired of going to the Caribbean and Mexico and staying at clothing optional resorts that are owned by non nudists and paying sky high rates for vacations. They all know they are being ripped off on their vacations as their rooms are normally $100 or more per night compared to rooms on prude sides or textile hotels.

As one guest said who no longer goes to the Caribbean, "the travel agent commission alone that is charged would pay for a week at The Terra Cotta Inn."

We have a toll free number 1-800-786-6938. You book directly with us and save on travel agents commissions which mean you get more value for you vacation dollar at Terra Cotta Inn.

Los Cabos is going to become a Temptations Resort. Here is a post I found about this chain owned by non nudists. CLICK HERE

Lots of single men in their twenties so the review says. That's interesting.

Australian council rejects nudist beach

Queensland, Australia council rejects nudist beach

In Queensland, Australia in the town of Townsville, their council rejected a written request from residents asking for a nude beach. The reason given, had "more important" things to do than to worry about their citizens.

Here is the story:

"A QUEENSLAND council has rejected an approach from residents to establish the state's first nudist beach.

Townsville mayor Les Tyrell had received a written request from residents to establish a beach in the north Queensland city.

However, he said the request had been rejected because the council had "more important things to worry about''.

"I indicated to them that we had a whole lot of other priorities on the agenda,'' Mr Tyrell said.

Mr Tyrell said he could not imagine a suitable location in the area for a nudist beach to be established and the council was unlikely to look at the issue in the future.

"Unless there was a large community request for it, we wouldn't consider it."...

For the full story click here

It is too bad that the council didn't really spend the time to investigate how positive nude beaches really are. Look at Haulover Beach nude beach. It went from being a filthy eyesore to the most popular beach in Miami.

Another good example is the popularity of nudist resorts. here in Palm Springs, we have the 2nd highest occupancy rate of ALL hotels in palm Springs, only the Indian casino hotel is busier.

Nudism is good business if properly run. It is too bad this council couldn't see that.

Playboy nudist resorts and nudists

In February, Playboy TV did a show at our resort the Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa. They picked us as the BEST nudist resort in the US. To see the NSFW version of this post go to: Click here for NSWF Playboy blog post version

They featured us as they wanted the most mainstream nudist resort in the US. And it helped that we cater to first timers. They did not want a wild place, but a place where you could relax and have fun in the nude. And of course they didn't want kids like you would find at typical nudist resorts.

Playboy also picked us because we were a clothing optional resort. Playboy knows that to be successful, you have to have a nudist resort that is friendly for women. Women in particular are nervous their first time. Many think they will ease into nude sunbathing by going topless first (and some do). However, our experience is once women are here, they feel so safe and relaxed, they immediately go nude for their whole vacation. However, if we were nudity mandatory like at most nudist resorts in the US, the women never book with us.

Playboy has done a lot for promoting the freedom of enjoying life in the nude. They are a double edge sword. Yes, they pander to men and have made many woman feel insecure because they are not photo shopped like the models, yet they also give the message that it is OK to enjoy life in the nude and be free.

Overall, I think Playboy has helped the nudist movement more than hurt it. Also years ago there was a story at about Paradise Lakes in Playboy magazine. The owner said that PR piece brought in more first timers than any other pr piece they had had at that point.

Finally, those who have seen the Playboy TV show about our resort have said it is the most wholesome and well done nudist show they ahve ever seen. Playboy and their producer Kira reed did a great job. Kira reed has actually been a friend of ours for many years.

Here is a story about Playboy:

They had a couple stay at our resort, where it was their first

"Playboy will see you now

...Just as if she were visiting her dentist or pet groomer, a lady must make an appointment to attend a Playboy casting call. Potential nudists generally sign up online and pay about $50 to secure their time in front of the lens. The audition fee turns out to be a wise move in terms of efficiency. Jeff Cohen, a VP for Playboy Special Editions and the man at the wheel of the Jacksonville casting, explained the price is just steep enough to weed out no-shows and ensure a more dedicated talent pool. As in, if American Idol ever wanted to cut those early-season train wreck episodes, they could start charging $50 to audition.

... Most have traveled great distances for a chance to cross "pose for Playboy" off their bucket lists. Christine Placona, a porcelain darling with her super-blond hair done up country like Reese Witherspoon's in Walk the Line drove up from south of Palatka. Girls report from Tampa, Virginia, Georgia and Mississippi.

No matter their origins, all ladies are clearly nervous, and it's the only time I've seen 20 attractive girls sit silently in a room, a scenario I never would have imagined possible. The clothed ladies hunker over paperwork, while the robed ones fidget, flip through the girlie mags from the goody bags and fuss with makeup.

The other common factor is the answer given when I ask girls what inspired them to come out and pose: It's been a dream since I first found my dad's stash when I was (insert age). Kelli Motes, a WingHouse girl from Bradenton, puts the cutest spin on the response: "I've been looking for the bunny on the cover since I was 13."

Cohen and I opined at length about why first impressions of Playboy are so powerful. He's heard thousands of women over his decades with Playboy cite their first encounter and deem it a life-changing one...

... "Wow! That was so much easier than I thought it would be!" is the go-to summation from ladies leaving their session.

For the full story click here

It is interesting where the women said posing was life changing. We have found first time nudists say the say thing. So many women for the first time in their lives have said they now feel comfortable with their bodies and who they are. It seems posing for Playboy and vacationing at a nudist resort have a lot in common.

Palm Springs has lots of activities

Nude and topless sunbathers from around the world stay at our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa here in sunny Palm Springs, CA. As Conde Nast Traveler Magazine said, Palm Springs is Hip.

Palm Springs is constantly being written up as one of the best vacation destinations in the world. For instance this year Lonely Planet travel guide company picked Palm Springs as one of the 10 must see destinations you had to vacation at this year. And one of the reasons Lonely Planet recommended Palm Springs was you had to stay at the great clothing optional resorts here, meaning us!

There is lots to do in Palm Springs such as art museums, casinos, hiking, horseback riding, shopping, playing golf, tennis, seeing concerts, plays, and much more such as getting a great all over tan poolside at our resort.

One fun activity is to take the tram up the side of the San Jacinto mountain which is the steepest mountain in the US.

Here is a story about the tram printed today:

"Destination: Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
Snow & spectacular views from Palm Springs Tramway at the top of the world!

Palm Springs, the desert oasis that features bubbling hot spas and dozens of lush green golf courses, also offers a winter wonderland. Yes, really.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway gives the desert visitors a chance to enjoy the magical sight of freshly fallen snow this time of year.

As the tramway carries you almost two miles up the mountain, it seems you could reach out and touch the sky. From the top of the ride you’ll see a magnificent view of the Coachella Valley far below, a sight unparalleled in Southern California.

For snow buffs, the mountaintop is covered with the powdery stuff much of the year, in addition to a variety of flora and fauna. Since there are various wild creatures that call the mountaintop home, no pets are allowed to go up on the tram...

After an extensive upgrading and modernization of the facilities in recent years, the unique people mover now features the world’s largest rotating trams, providing an unforgettable journey to the top of Mount San Jacinto. Along the way you view the jagged cliff and rock formations of Chino Canyon...

Over the years, the small alpine village at the top has played host to dozens of movies and television shows...

The Food Network has even featured the mountain top restaurants. With vast windows framing the magnificent views, Peaks Restaurant offers fine dining, while The Pines Café is appealing to more casual customers with its cafeteria-style. Both are open for lunch and dinner...

For nature enthusiasts, free guided walks are available. In all, there are 54 miles of trails over the 14,000 acres of pristine wilderness. Cross-country skiing will begin soon, and camping is available in San Jacinto State Park...

Lena Zimmerschied, public affairs manager, reminds that for Southern Californians who have never seen snow, “this is the most beautiful place to enjoy a romp in fresh clean snow.”

...For the convenience of visitors, the tramway lists daily weather reports, information on parking and facilities, rates, etc. at 888-515-TRAM, or visit www.pstramway.com.

Because we are Palm Springs' only clothing optional vacation resort that caters to couples, we are busy 7 days a week instead of just weekends like other places. The tramway allows us to sell special discounted tram tickets just like the big hotels here in town because we are so popular and so busy.

A little weekend funny post

Dear Friends and viewers,

Just before the end of the year I wanted to thank you for the e-mails you have forwarded over the year.

I must send a big thank you to whoever sent me the one about rat poop in the glue on envelopes, because I now have to use a wet sponge with every envelope that needs sealing.

Also, I now have to wipe the top of every can I open for the same reason.

I no longer have any savings because I gave it all to a sick girl (Penny Brown) who is about to die in hospital for the 1,387,258th time. But that will change once I receive the $15,000 that Bill Gates/Microsoft are sending me for participating in their special email programs. Or from the senior bank clerk in Nigeria who wants me to split seven million dollars with me for pretending to be a long lost relative of a customer who died intestate.

I no longer worry about my soul because I have 363,214 angels looking out for me.

I have learned that my prayers only get answered if I forward emails to seven friends and make a wish within five minutes.

I no longer drink Coca-Cola because it can remove toilet stains.

I no longer can buy gas without taking a friend along to watch the car so a serial killer won't crawl in my back seat when I'm filling up.

I no longer go to shopping centers because someone will drug me with a perfume sample and rob me.

I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a number and then I'll get a phone bill with calls to Jamaica , Uganda , Singapore and Uzbekistan .

I can't use anyone's toilet but mine because a big brown African spider is lurking under the seat to cause me instant death when it bites my rear.

I can't even pick up the $5.00 I found dropped in the car park because it probably was placed there by a sex molester waiting underneath my car to grab my leg.

If you don't send this email to at least 144,000 people in the next 70 minutes, a large dove with diarrhea will sit on your head at 5:00pm this afternoon and fleas from 12 camels will infest your back, causing you to grow a hairy hump.

I know this because it actually happened to a friend of my next door neighbour's ex-mother-in-law's second husband's cousin's beautician.

By the way....a South American scientist after a lengthy study has discovered that people with low IQ who don't have enough sex, always read their emails while holding the mouse.

Don't bother taking it off now, it's too late.

Regards,

Tom

I wish I could have been creative enough to have thought of this fun post, but no one of our guests sent this joke to me.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Some call centers are returning to the US

This post has perfect timing for me. I received a sales call today from someone overseas, I assume in India as I could not understand him. For about 30 seconds he said something like "can I speak to..." and I kept saying what? who? what do you want? and then I hung up.

His company was trying to sell something I could tell. I bet the person I talked to has zero sales day after day after day as he could not be understood. And the company that hired him, the managers are probably giving themselves bonuses saying we hire poor slobs overseas and pay them $10/day instead of $100/day to hire Americans. So what if they never sell anything. Think of how much we save by exporting jobs.

Last year, I had a problem with my American Express card. I called the toll free number on the back of the credit card. I got a call center in I assume India. The first 2 or 3 people I talked with, I could not understand. One of them a "supervisor" said he was the only one who could solve my problem and refused to route me to someone else. I struggled with him for maybe 15 minutes. I called someone else who I couldn't understand. I got the same unintelligible "supervisor" who I hung up on again.

Finally, I called on a weekend and got someone who had a working knowledge of English and got my problem resolved. I bet I wasted about 90 minutes of my time on a simple 10 minute problem and to this day this experience has left a bad impression of American Express with me. I have never had this problem with my Citibank card. Guess which one I use the most.

We used to have 3 Dell computers at work. About 3 years ago we had a problem with one. I wasted I don't know how much time (maybe 3 or 4 hours) dealing with people who couldn't speak English at the Dell call centers and they couldn't help me.

Finally, I paid a local computer repair person to help me and he confirmed we had a defective hard disk which was sent by Dell to us for free as it was under warrenty. However, my experience made me so unhappy, my next 2 computers were not Dell's and the next one I buy, guess what, it will NOT be a Dell.

Why do American companies think that by infuriating their customers in hiring companies that hire people that barely speak English, it is good business?

Finally, some companies are starting to see the light. Here is the story:

The Bangalore Backlash: Call Centers Return to U.S.
Some Firms See Value in Familiar Voices

If you prefer a customer service agent who speaks "American," then computer maker Dell has a deal for you.

Catering to consumers put off by the accents of Bangalore, Manila and other call-center hubs around the globe, Dell will guarantee -- for a price -- that the person who picks up the phone on a support call will be, as company ads mention in bold text, "based in North America."

The Your Tech Team service, with agents in the United States, costs $12.95 a month for customers with a Dell account, or $99 a year for people who buy a new computer. It also promises that wait times will average two minutes or less. Without the upgrade, a customer is likely to get technical help from someone in India, the Philippines or the other places where Dell has operators...

Occasionally, "we've heard from customers that it's hard to understand a particular accent and that they couldn't understand the instructions they were getting," said Dell spokesman Bob Kaufman. "This illustrates Dell's commitment to customer choice."

Complaints about customer service agents based in other countries are an everyday phenomenon across several industries. For many U.S. consumers, the diverse accents that come across customer service lines constitute one of the most pervasive reminders of globalization and the offshoring of jobs. That can make personnel in the call center targets for American anger.

Companies can save 50 to 75 percent on their call centers by putting them overseas, according to industry analysts.

But getting a customer service agent with whom it is easy to communicate ought to be a service that is provided gratis, some industry analysts said...

Although airlines, banks and some retailers have overseas call centers, computer makers have been particularly apt to put call centers in foreign countries. According to an online survey conducted by CFI Group, more than a third of respondents who recently made a call for computer support reported that the person they reached was outside the United States...

The customer satisfaction score for overseas PC call centers was 23 percent lower than for U.S. call centers, CFI Group reported.

"The customers say, 'The agent just doesn't understand what I'm trying to do,' " Kramer said. "The customer explains his or her request three or four times, and then they get a rote answer back."...

Though some have suggested that the friction between U.S. consumers and foreign operators arises from prejudice, some observers see it differently.

"I hear people say all the time that people who complain about call centers in India are being racist or nativist -- but it's not as simple as that," said Sharmila Rudrappa, a sociology professor at University of Texas at Austin and native of Bangalore, India. "If you need tech support, it already shows you're having a crazy time getting your Dell computer to work. And when things go haywire, you want assurance, you want familiarity, you want someone to hold your hand and say it's okay. What you don't want is to have to work at understanding the person on the other end of the line."...

"People in the developing countries are hungry for any material that will improve their skills," Desai said. "There's a real hunger to improve. It's not that we want these people to be speaking with an American accent. We want them to be intelligible."

Enough Americans are frustrated by them, however, that companies such as Jitterbug have concluded that keeping their call centers in the United States is the best option.

Inns said the company briefly considered putting call center overseas -- he, too, had heard that costs could be radically cut.

But he said those estimates leave out the cost of frustrating customers.

"What's missing from those estimates is what the impact is on customer satisfaction and what is the impact on first-call resolution" -- that is, resolving the issue in one try...

Dell declined to release numbers on how many people had signed up for the Your Tech Team service, but Kaufman said officials have been pleased by the response.

"That part of the business -- the Your Tech Team -- has grown, and we think that customers will continue to value it," Kaufman said.

Sorry Dell, you are doing too little, too late. When I can call and not have to pay extra to speak to someone who knows English, I will consider busying a Dell again.

Yes, you save some money outsourcing, but how much do you lose by turning people off to your products because of your call centers?

Here at The Terra Cotta Inn we believe in excellent customer service which is why we have one of the highest repeat guest rates in the travel industry and why this summer Tripadvisor.com picked us as one of the 10 best clothing optional resorts in the world. Last year AOL.com did the same. Also even though we have been in a recession all year, our resort will probably be the only one that increased its occupancy this year in ALL of Palm Springs. That is due to our great service.

I sure hope American companies wise up to the fact that customer service is very important if you want to retain customers.

Why swinger clubs pretend to be nudist clubs or nudist resorts

Many swinger clubs in the US pretend to be nudist clubs or nudist resorts. As the owner of The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa in sunny Palm Springs, CA this can be very frustrating as we have known of many first timers who accidentally went to a swinger place thinking it was a nudist place and if they had not contacted us, they would have thought all nudist places were sex clubs too.

For instance Caliente Resorts down in Florida once a month has a swinger weekend.

The problem is most local governments force swinger places to be "underground" or pretend to be wholesome nudist resorts or clubs because they don't want sex clubs to operate.

Last year a swinger club in Orange, CA was shut down by the local authorities. Now a swinger club in Connecticut is shut down. I am sure more have been shut down that I don't know about.

Here is the story:

"Connecticut police have arrested three men accused of running a swingers’ club inside a hotel bar.

E-mailed photos of risqué behavior led police to Club 91 and the Beverly Hills Suites in Windsor Locks.

They said on weekends the club would run “Swingers Groups” where men and women came to either engage in or watch sexual activity.

When police ran a sting operation last month, they said they witnessed it first hand.
On the evening of November 8, 2008, police report seeing 60 to 70 people inside the club.

All of them paid a $40 admission to get in.
Police arrested the three men who they said organized the “Swingers Groups.“

Nicholas Maulucci faces obscenity and public indecency charges while Brian True and Sharok Jacobi face criminal liability to commit those two charges.

Liquor law violations at the club included smoking inside a public building, nudity, sex acts, not serving food and improper use of a service bar..."

Personally, I think it is very dangerous to swap bodily fluids with strangers. However, to each their own. However, as long as government authorities shut down swinger clubs, then those that want to operate above board, will pretend to be nudist clubs and people need to ask questions before booking at a nudist resort.

Let the buyer beware: Not all nudist resorts are what they appear to be.

Now if you want a vacation in a true clothing optional environment where you can be nice and safe and not have to worry about being hit upon, give us The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa a call at 800-786-6938.

Football, Fox TV, and nudity

We all know the famous Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction. Janet and Justin Timberlake were singing at the Superbowl. Justin pulled on Janet's top and exposed her breast. The FCC was incensed and fined CBS millions. CBS won in court.

Now Fox-TV the darling of the right wing extremists accidentally showed part of a football players crotch (Visanthe Shiancoe) in the locker room.

Will the FCC be as equally as incensed because of this exposure? Or will it be because it is Fox-TV the arm of the Republican party, they will just accept an apology?

My personal opinion is two wrongs don't make a right. The FCC was wrong to fine CBS for the Janet Jackson exposure and they would be wrong to fine Fox TV.

I would like to see what the FCC does and what their explanation will be if there is one.

And if you have always wanted to vacation at a clothing optional resort, now is the perfect time.

Fun New Year's Eve Clothing Optional Party at The Terra Cotta Inn, Palm Springs

Ever been to a clothing optional New Year's eve party before? The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa's Nude Year's eve party is the best.

Every year, we always sell out. It's so much fun. It's the most fun you can have without your clothes on.

Right now we have just 5 rooms left at our resort.

The party is fantastic. We start with a 5 course sit down dinner. Steak and lobster. All you can eat. Then on to dancing the night away with our favorite DJ.

Come midnight, we have a decadent dessert buffet and champagne toast to ring in the New Year, or is that Nude Year?

As you can see in the above photo, the dress code is clothing optional. Some women dress elegantly in sheer tops, and dresses. Very sexy and chic. Other guests however, prefer to dress in suits. Birthday suits that is. Clothing is never required at our New Year's eve party.

And the price is right. The party is only $250 a couple. Our party is a break even event for our guests. That way it is the best value New Years Eve party you will ever attend, with or without clothes on.

For instance the lobster is Canadian New Brunswick lobster, the best you can buy. If you think Maine lobster is good, wait until you have eaten New Brunswick lobster. And lots of other goodies.

You will love our party and our resort.

If you have always wanted to stay at a clothing optional resort, now is the perfect time. Tripadvisor.com this July picked us as one of the 10 best clothing optional resorts in the world. Last Year, AOL.com picked us as one of the 10 best and the only nudist resort on the west coast that was honored. And in October, the Vancouver Sun newspaper in Canada picked us as one of the best places in the world to go nude sunbathing. Even Los Angeles Magazine picked us as one of their four favorite vacation resorts in Palm Springs, the only nude resort that was honored.

We are also the most mainstream clothing optional resort in the US. We are perfect for first timers trying topless or nude sunbathing. You do not have to be a card carrying nudist to stay here.

A Terra Cotta Inn Nudist Resort vacation is the best value around

I remember a couple of nudist resort owners who said to me when we first opened that we "needed to squeeze as much money as possible out of nudists. They are ripe for the pickings as there aren't many nice nudist resorts around."

There is an expression in the nudist industry called "nudist premium" which is the high prices some nudist resorts charge just for the right for their guests to be nude compared to what they would charge at textile hotels. You can see this at some Caribbean and Mexican resorts where they charge so much more to be on the nude side of the hotel compared to the prude side of a resort.

I remember having these owners make fun of how we operated our resort because we always tried to compete with the textile resorts in town on price and quality and be the best value nudist resort in the US.

Well both of those owners are out of business. Simply charging high prices because you can and not being a good value is not a viable long term business model in my opinion.

Well, it is official. The federal government announced that the US has been in a recession since December 2007. Everyone is trying to come up with discounts to keep their guests.

Our nudist resort has always been the best value of all nudist resorts in the US. So we didn't have to come up with new discounts like overpriced resorts have to. Our guests never felt like they were being overcharged, so they keek coming back which is why we average over a 75% repeat guest rate, probably the highest in the travel industry.

All of a sudden it is chic to be a good value. And that is exactly we we have always been.

Here is an article about good value marketing:

Kellogg is advertising its cereal as costing less than $0.50 a bowl. Kmart is promoting its layaway service leading up to the holiday shopping season...

It's the latest marketing trend, poised to supplant green-themed campaigns (at least until the holiday season has passed). Whether concentrating on their differentiating deals, special seasonal offers, or cost-cutting coupons, brands are reimagining their approach to communicating their potential -- and suddenly more economically discerning -- customers.

According to a survey conducted by Harris Interactive and commissioned by online coupon site RetailMeNot, consumers are likely to cut their budgets during an economic recession but will continue to spend if provided with discounts. They're also just as likely to look to the Web for deals as they are to stores.

In response, consumer marketers are focusing their most recent ad campaigns not just on the bargains they're able to offer but also on the economic value they can deliver at a time when the country's acutely aware of what it's spending and where. Ads that take a decidedly cash-conscious spin are cropping up on television, in print, and of course, online...

Cash In on Oprah's Finance Content

The all-powerful talk-show queen has always made a point of addressing current social issues and offering advice on how to overcome those that threaten to prevent her viewers from living their "best life."

For the full story click here

Now this December and January we run a special on Monday thru Thursday nights of stay 1 night the 2nd is half priced (excluding the holidays). Or get $100 off an already discounted weekly rate. We didn't just start offering this discount. We have ALWAYS discounted in December and January since we opened 14 years ago. And we run specials on our massages too in December and January.

Being a good value nudist resort is good business as this July, Tripadvisor.com picked us as one of the 10 best clothing optional resorts in the world. A number of years ago we were even picked as the feature travel destination in Los Angeles Magazines Best of LA issue with a 5 page article.

I would estimate that about 50% of our guests use Ontario when they vacation here. Of course you can also fly into LAX (120 miles away), Las Vegas (280 miles away) or Phoenix (280 miles away).

Now is you chance to try topless or nude sunbathing at one of the best nudist resorts in the world according to AOL.com and tripadvisor.com.

Terra Cotta Inn annual room sales event starts on December 1st

Our annual winter nude sunbathing special start at Terra Cotta Inn on Monday December 1st.

How can we make the Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa more popular in the winter? By having our annual stay 1 night, the 2nd is half priced special room sale on Monday through Thursday nights in December and January (excluding the holidays). And for an even better rate, we discount our weekly winter rates by an additional $100 per week starting at $859/couple/week.

We are very popular in the winter as we are now the only hotel in Palm Springs that has outdoor heaters poolside to keep our guests nice and toasty warm (and nude) once the sun has gone down. (The Ritz Carlton was the only other hotel in town that cared enough about their guets to have poolside heaters. They are currently undergoing a $500 million renovation. When they re-open we will have to see if they keep their poolside heaters).

We also upgraded to a salt water pool and jacuzzi which is wonderful on your skin. We keep our pool heated to 86F in the winter. It can be used 24 hours a day.

With a salt water pool, you can be in the water for hours and don't get all that itchiness like you do from chlorine pools. Just this spring, the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas put out a press release bragging that their premier pool is now a salt water pool, and that they are the only hotel on the Las Vegas strip to care enough about their guests to go salt water. We are probably the ONLY nudist resort in the world that has invested in a salt water system pool and jacuzzi for our guests happiness. We converted to a salt water pool 2 1/2 years ago as soon as our county let us.

Right now we have rooms available in the months of December and January, but we do book up fast. Our regular rooms start at $149/couple/midweek and $169 on weekends. Our weekly rates are discounted to $859/couple/week. We include complementary breakfast and snacks, early check in (10am) and late check out (5pm) at no extra charge.

Give us a call at 800-786-6938 to make reservations. We answer the phones from
8am-10pm PST.

Nudism in the US needs to become more profitable

AANR, the major nudist association in the US has done a fantastic job in the last few years of mainstreaming nudism in America. They have obtained more and better PR than ever before.

Now it is time for nudist resorts to step up and act mainstream. One of the ways is to operate upscale true resorts, not glorified campgrounds and parks calling themselves resorts. Another way is to stop insisting nudist resorts must cater to families with kids. Polls show vacationers take more vacations without kids, so why would they want to go somewhere and listen to noisy children? Thus, many first timers just skip trying nude recreation as they don't want to be naked around kids. That is why our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn does not book families with kids.

The best nudist blog in my opinion is Diary of a nudist. He wrote a good post today:

"I've said time and time again on this blog that if nudism can actually become a thriving capitalist profit cash cow, it will gain more widespread acceptance. Richard Mason, the president of the Florida Naturist Association says it's time for the state of Florida to "grow up" and create more nude beaches, which would create revenue from parking fees and help with state revenue problems...."

For his full post click here

I agree 100% that for nudism to grow in the US, it has to flex it's financial muscle. Here in Palm Springs, we have the 2nd highest occupancy rate of ALL hotels in town. I have also been told that we are the only established hotel that has increased occupancy this year. This also means that when you visit a city, you should stay at a nudist resort instead of staying at a Holiday Inn, Best Western, etc. You can't complain why there aren't more nudist resorts in the US if you don't stay at them.

Because our resort is so successful, I was elected president of the Palm Springs chamber of commerce a number of years ago. City officials in Palm Springs have a very good opinion of our nudist resort because we bring in so much tax revenue to the town.

Nudist resorts need to upgrade and start acting like businesses instead of hobbies if this industry is to grow.

Palm Springs needs to market more to the national and international guests

Nudist resorts operate just like many resort cities. They market to the easiest customers to attract, "the locals" and wonder why they are only busy on weekends.

14 years ago, we specifically bought a resort that had big rooms, was very spacious and was geared for vacationers. Thus, about 80% of our business comes from out of state and/or out of country. We are busy 7 days a week, not just weekends like other places. There is nothing more boring than going to a nudist resort and finding out no one is around on Sunday thru Fridays because you booked a weekend getaway.

For instance over Thanksgiving, we have more guests from Canada here then we did from Southern California. And the Canadians were not coming here for our Thanksgiving holiday, they just wanted to getaway from the cold and snow.

I am a past president of the Palm Springs chamber of commerce. When I was president, I tried my hardest to teach other businesses that you have to cater to the vacation market, not the Saturday night getaway market. Unfortunately, a lot of businesses in the tourist industry did not listen and are now suffering as Southern Californians rein in their their weekend getaways.

Here is a story about tourism in Palm Springs which applies to many tourist destinations:

"Valley Tourist Hot Spots Seeing Downturn, Hoping for Local Turnout

It's the season for travel but tourist spots here in the Valley are just not seeing numbers like they used to.

"We've seen about a 10% drop in our attendance so far this year," says Kimberly Bowers with The Living Desert. She says the struggling economy is delaying what is usually the time things start picking up. Desert adventures, which offers jeep tours of the Coachella Valley have seen nearly a 20% drop in tourism...

"We've increased our advertising in the L.A. and San Bernardino areas and also here locally, we've also been doing some P.R. efforts and we also have a lot of special events coming up," says Lena Zimmerschied with Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

"We'd like to see tourism in Southern California increasing as far as regional tourism is concerned. So with our feeder markets for example San Diego and Los Angeles hopefully seeing more people coming in from those areas as well," said Bowers.

The tourists we spoke with say they're traveling less than before this year and that could be a silver lining for the tourism business here in the valley.

We were usually going to go to Florida for the season and we decided to stay local because of that reason," says Cindy Colberg who is visiting from San Diego...

Palm Springs needs to do what big cities like Chicago, New York, Las Vegas, etc do, market nationally and internationally. We have probably the best resort weather in the world, yet, businesses here are marketing to Los Angeles, and San Diego. They should be marketing to Seattle, Portland, Chicago, Vancouver, Calgary, etc. market to where the winter weather is cold with snow. Then make sure you take care of your customer so they want to come back. Then they would be busier.

This year will be our busiest year of business. We have found lots of guests have cancelled their Hawaiian, Caribbean, Mexican, European, and Floridian vacations and flown to our resort instead.

Palm Springs tourist officials need to realize that we are in competition for tourists around the world. And the one trump card we hold is we have the best weather anywhere since we are the sunniest city in the US. I wish they wouldn't spend so much money marketing to Southern California, but instead market to vacationers.

Nude beaches seen as a way to keep Florida beaches open

As the sun is setting on the current federal administration, historians are already debating which administration has been the biggest financial disaster for the American economy, Herbert Hoover's or George W. Bushes. Only time will tell which has been worse.

With the biggest federal deficits in history, they would have been even larger if the federal government had not cut back on revenue sharing with states and cities. Part of these cutbacks have even affected Florida, where Jeb Bush was governor.

Naturally, when a state, city, or county has to cut back, the first thing that goes is services that citizens enjoy. Florida for instance is closing beaches.

Governments never think of cutting back on their bloated salaries or benefits. And only rarely do they cut their bloated staffs. Instead, they think, "we'll make the citizens suffer" by cutting police, fire, education, beaches, parks and recreation, etc.

Richard Mason, who with his wife Shirley have been major supporters of Haulover nude beach in Miami. Back in the 70's and 80's this was a terrible, dangerous beach, and was very run down until it became an official nude beach. Now it is the most popular nude beach in the US. They and their supporters have done a great job.

My wife, Mary Clare, was born in Tampa, Florida. That's why we are in Palm Springs as we know Florida has the rainiest weather in the US.

In the 14 years that our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa, of Palm Springs, California has been open, we have been to Florida about 5 times. We have always tried to nude sunbathe at Haulover, but have never yet been in Miami when they have had nice weather. It was either too cold, raining, or there were big tropical storms for days on end. We have driven by the beach in the rain, so we know where it is. Someday, we will be there and actually get to nude sunbathe.

Here is Richard Mason's proposal for nude beaches:

"Nude beaches seen as cover for cash gaps

Times are tough, maybe even tough enough to start paying more attention to one of the state's leading nudists.

"It's time for the state of Florida to grow up," said Richard Mason, the president of the Florida Naturist Association...

Mason's idea is simple: More nude beaches equals more state revenue.

"If you can build golf courses for golfers, why can't you designate beaches for naturists?" Mason asked.

He uses Haulover Beach Park in Miami-Dade as Exhibit A.

For the past 18 years, that beach has been designated as a sanctioned clothing-optional beach — the only one in the state.

"It's drawing more visitors than the Florida Marlins and the Miami Dolphins combined," Mason said.

And the county is reaping the benefits of the $5 parking fee, which brings in about $1.4 million a year, he said...

"It's a destination beach all because it's a naturist beach," he said.

Mason's pitch for more nude beaches is especially well timed because Gov. Charlie Crist is looking to make significant cuts in state spending, including from the Division of Recreation and Parks...

To do that, the division has come up with a plan to close 19 parks across the state until the economy rebounds...

But instead of closing the parks, Mason has argued, the state can more than compensate for its revenue shortfalls by keeping all the parks open and changing the designation of a few beachfront parks into clothing-optional spots...

The John D. MacArthur Beach State Park in northern Palm Beach County had been an unofficial clothing-optional beach until the state took it over in the 1980s and began arresting nude sunbathers there.

A state appellate court decision ruled that being nude alone does not constitute indecent exposure, and that there must be some lewd and lascivious behavior with it.

"So you can have a naturist beach as long as it is in a designated area," Mason said.

Public officials, however, have been reluctant to make accommodations for nudists...

Like Mason's request this week, the sunbathing group made an economic argument to the tourism board, saying that a nude beach would bring in dollars to the county...

In today's budget climate, its harder to scoff at Mason's pitch without mulling over the pros and cons.

"It's been a successful formula at Haulover for 18 years," he said. "Why not give it a try?..."

A bare-bones budget or some bare-bones bathers."

DATE : November 28, 2008
SUBJECT: Lee Baxandall (1935-2008)
TO : All naturists

Dear Naturist,

The Naturist Society has announced with profound sadness that its founder, Lee Baxandall, has died in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Baxandall, who had suffered from Parkinson's Disease, was 73 years old at the time of his death on November 27, 2008.

Baxandall began his work as a naturist activist more than 30 years ago. With a background in writing and publishing, Lee's naturist passion led him in 1976 to form the Free Beaches Documentation Center, which he located in his hometown of Oshkosh. By 1980, Lee had founded The Naturist Society (TNS), and TNS had presented its first Gathering for naturists. 'Clothed with the Sun,' the flagship publication of TNS in its early years, was renamed 'Nude & Natural,' or more simply, 'N' magazine in 1989. Today, the magazine has a staff of professional and volunteer writers, but in the early days, much of the content of the magazine was pure Baxandall.

Lee was also the initiating force behind other familiar naturist organizations. In 1983, it was a Baxandall idea (and $70 in seed money that Lee pulled from his own pocket and gave to Murray Kaufman) that led to the TNS special interest group that would become Gay Naturists International. In 1990, Baxandall jump-started the Naturist Action Committee as an adjunct to TNS. The Naturist Education Foundation followed in 1993.

For the decades of the 1980s and 1990s, 'Lee Baxandall's World Guide to Nude Beaches and Resorts' was the standard companion for those seeking information on naturist destinations throughout the world. Each edition of the World Guide reflected Lee's naturist philosophy, not only for growing numbers of naturists, but also for the benefit of an expanding mainstream audience. Baxandall's World Guide is the inspiration for 'The World's Best Nude Beaches and Resorts,' a recent TNS publication that carries on the tradition.

In 2002, recognizing the inevitable effect of his declining health, Baxandall transferred ownership of The Naturist Society to a carefully selected handful of longtime associates. TNS is necessarily a dynamic organization that responds to the changing needs of its members. Nevertheless, owners Nicky Hoffman Lee and Margaret Thornton have remained remarkably faithful to the vision of Lee Baxandall.

DETAILS AND ARRANGMENTS

Arrangements are pending. Lee's family has not yet announced details. More complete obituaries will, of course, appear in N magazine and in The Newsletter. The Naturist Action Committee will distribute further information in the form of NAC Updates, as details become available.

The directors of the Naturist Action Committee and the Naturist Education Foundation join with the ownership and staff of The Naturist Society in marking, with respect and appreciation, the passing of an exceptional individual.

"Body acceptance is the idea. Nude recreation is the way."
- Lee R. Baxandall (1935-2008)
