Is nudism for whites only or is it color blind?

There is a very interesting post on the Naturist Review blog Click here to read it He writes, "Is naturism for whites only? When I view images online of naturists, they're mostly caucasian. When I go to nude beaches or resorts, I mainly see caucasians."

Through a lot of history, having a tan was looked down upon as it was a sign that you labored outdoors and were a lower class. Many women used lead or arsenic based cosmetics to bleach their skin white.

In 1903, the connection between suntanning and curing rickets was made official by Niels Finsen who won a Nobel price for his discovery. So the sun was found to be beneficial.

Then in the 1920's it was a combination of Coco Chanel getting accidentally sun burnt and Parisians falling in love with Josephine Baker and her beautiful "caramel colored" skin tone that sunbathing started to become popular with the wealthier leisure class. In the 1940's women's magazines started advertising sunbathing as an activity for the common woman, and sunbathing really took off in popularity.

Now in the '40's, '50's, and '60's there was general discrimination against people of color from baseball, to TV, to modeling, etc. The "mainstream" only used white models. I would assume this discrimination also carried over into nudist publications of that era.

Patty, who is pictured above, has worked for us for 8 years. She has been our manager for the last 3 years. She is a Latina and a great employee and person. And Norma who just started working for us is also a Latina.

We have all races represented at our resort. We have all backgrounds from American whites, Canadians, Europeans, Blacks, Asians, etc.

Yes, white guests predominate, but in the 15 years of being open, I have noticed more and more minorities enjoy nudist resorts and nude recreation. I think as nudism is seen as a more mainstream activity, even more minorities will join in.

Palm Springs has the best weather in the US for topless and nude sunbathing

Palm Springs was 89F and 100% sunny yesterday Wednesday April 8th. But, you never would have known that if you had looked at weather.com's predictions yesterday. They said Palm Springs would be 76F and partly cloudy.

Now our resort was 100% full guests yesterday. Yet, I know of 2 couples from Los Angeles that cancelled driving out for day use because of weather.com. No matter how much I told the people that there was not a cloud in the sky and we we were warm, they did not believe me. They said they didn't want to take a chance because we would be cold and cloudy yesterday.

I hate weather.com How can companies run a site that is so WRONG and yet people blindly believe it? Americans know politicians lie to us all the time, why don't they realize the same is true about weather.com?

In January, weather.com forecast 12 days of rain for Palm Springs, yet we only had 2 days where it was partly cloudy for maybe about 5 hours in the day.

I wonder how many $10's of thousands of dollars we lose every year due to their inaccuracies. And multiply that by all the other tourist businesses in Palm Springs. Can the tourist industry file claims with their site for gross incompetence and scaring away customers?

Finally, when I tell people at our resort, how wrong weather.com is, they all say it is wrong where they live too. Why isn't there something more accurate? Like Chimpanzees throwing darts at a weather map. I know they could more accurately forecast the weather, compared to weather.com

This is the 2nd time this year that I know of that Westjet is having a 1 or 2 day 50%off airfare sale. It has never been more affordable to fly to Palm Springs on your vacation than it has this year.

We have more Canadian guest than ever this year. Last night, 30% of our guests at our nudist resort were from Canada. The major reason is Westjet as they have brought reasonable airfares to Canadians and Air Canada has become a lot more competitive in their pricing.

As everyone who has stayed at our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa located in sunny Palm Springs, California knows, we are the most popular nudist resort in the western US and the only clothes free nudist resort that caters to vacationers instead of being just a weekend getaway like other places.

So many people who have never been to a nudist resort before rely upon the unbiased advice that they get at Tripadvisor.com.

Now Tripadvisor is allowing businesses to paste these reviews on their sites. Before I would always just say go to http://tripadvisor.com to read guest reviews. Now they can see them here.

Tripadvisor is so helpful for first timers. For instance, I always say we are the ONLY nudist resort that is busy 7 days a week year round in the western US.

We find that people who don't research trip advisor don't believe that we are the only nudist vacation resort. Some people make a mistake and think other places are going to be popular just like us and book at these weekend getaways when they really wanted a vacation resort for a week or midweek.

But, once they read trip advisor and see comments about other clothing optional hotels, where people write they were the only guests at another resort during their stay (or part of the stay) or that restaurants are only open on weekends (when they have guests), they then believe what I write. Especially when our guests write what a great time they had and how they met guests from around the world at our resort.

So tripadvisor, I commend you for allowing businesses to use these reviews. It will only add to the guests experience and pleasure on their vacations so they can pick out the correct hotel.

Now don't get me wrong, not everyone wants to stay at a popular hotel. Some first timers want to go to a nudist place where no one else will be around as they are so afraid and nevous. When that is the case, we always recommend the other places in town midweek to them. And we say you can look at tripadvisor and see they are only weekend getaways.

Finally, even negative reviews on tripadvisor are helpful. One guest gave us a bad review because I would not allow him to use illegal drugs or be sexually active poolside at our resort. He then wrote that he went to a local sex hotel instead and they allowed those activities. So many guests have told me that review made them feel very safe and comfortable booking our resort.

We got a cancellation for February 27th and 28th

Last minute cancellations are really hard on repeat guests. So many people are begging for a room at our hotel and we have to tell them we are full.

Guests then book somewhere else like Las Vegas, Los Angeles, or San Diego which is no where near as much fun as staying at The Terra Cotta Inn here in sunny Palm Springs. When we call people on our wait list about last minute cancellations our repeat guests always say, "why can't those people cancel earlier so other people can have a chance to come to Palm Springs?"

Good news for nudists - Coffee, Tea, or no skin cancer?

Great news for nudists. Drinking caffeinated beverages may offer skin cancer protection.

In the last few years, scientists have been saying people should be exposed more to the sun without sunscreen, as our bodies produce Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin.. And Vitamin D is a major antioxidant.

Now there is good news for nudists. Drinking caffeinated beverages may help prevent skin cancer.

Here's the story from the University of Washington:

"Caffeine May Offer Some Skin Cancer Protection

Past studies have suggested that caffeine might offer some protection from skin cancer, and new research may explain why...

They found that in cells damaged by UV rays, caffeine interrupted a protein called ATR-Chk1, causing the damaged cells to self-destruct...

ATR is essential to damaged cells that are growing rapidly, Nghiem said, and caffeine specifically targets damaged cells that can become cancerous. "Caffeine more than doubles the number of damaged cells that will die normally after a given dose of UV," he said.

We got a cancellation for Feb 20 and 21

One of the most frustrating things for our repeat guests is so many are turned away on weekends by us because of our being full. The guest is told we're full, they then book somewhere else like Las Vegas, Los Angeles, or San Diego which is no where near as much fun as staying at The Terra Cotta Inn here in sunny Palm Springs. We get a last minute cancellation and our repeat guests say, "why didn't those people cancel last week so we could have come to Palm Springs instead?"

Well we got a weekend cancellation today. You are more than welcome to book the Fri & Sat or just the Saturday, February 21st.

The weather is supposed to be fantastic this weekend in the low 80's and nice and sunny. The first transcontinental flight was 50 years ago Jan 25th

Last year, about 85% of our guests came from out of state or out of country. As the only nudist resort in the west that caters to couples on vacation, because of jets, we have guests from around the world that stay with us. Although most come from all over the US, Canada, England, and Australia.

The number one home state of our guests is Washington. Number two is the province of British Columbia (that's where Vancouver is located). California is #3.

We cater to vacationers. So whenever you want to spend more than just a saturday night in sunny Palm Springs, we are always the first nudist resort people call.

The world has become a smaller place because of the jet for good and bad.

Here is a story about the first flight from the New York Times:

"Lobster on the Menu and History in the Air


The flaps deployed, the landing gear descended and the gleaming Boeing 707 touched down on New York asphalt...

It was a few minutes after 4 p.m. on Jan. 25, 1959, and aviation history had just been made by American Airlines Flight 2: the first transcontinental commercial jet trip, from Los Angeles to what was then known as Idlewild, and is now known as Kennedy International Airport.

It was not the first commercial jet flight (that was B.O.A.C. from London to Rome in 1952) or the first nonstop transcontinental flight (T.W.A., Los Angeles to New York, 1953) or even the first commercial long-haul jet trip (Pan American, Idlewild to Paris, October 1958)...

“The shrinking effect of the jetliner upon geography distorted the earth’s face,” wrote The Los Angeles Times’s on-flight correspondent, Cordell Hicks. “The plane’s enchanting quality consists precisely of its capacity to displace shapes, categories, images and events.”

The scene was straight out of “Mad Men.” Alcohol and cigarette smoke flowed freely. The flight attendants, who would have been called stewardesses, wore heels with their snug blue uniforms — “Most people wouldn’t fit into it today unless you were anorexic,” Ms. Breyton told a radio reporter in 1999 — though they were allowed to change into flats during the meal service.

And the food! No record of the inaugural repast survives (though Mr. Hicks noted that “breakfast was served at 10:15 a.m. over Grand Junction, Colo., cocktails at 11:26 a.m. over Des Moines and lunch at 12:30 p.m. over Cleveland”). But Ms. Breyton dug up a list of the rotating menus American offered on the route. Highlights included fresh Maine lobster with capers, filet mignon, herb-buttered fan tan rolls and macaroon ice cream balls with brandied apricot sauce.

Ms. Breyton said the menus were for first class, but, hard as it is to believe, Mr. Solon said that in those days the same food was served in coach.

Today, American’s domestic cross-country coach passengers may buy a 5.75-ounce package of Lay’s Stax potato crisps for $3, or, if they’re famished, an Asian chicken wrap ($6).

Of course, the ticket itself was relatively expensive. A round-trip in coach in 1959 cost $238.80 — that’s $1,743 in today’s dollars, or about 6 times the price of a bargain coach fare on American today.

On the other hand, the earlier flights were not just cushier but faster: 4 ½ hours eastbound and, because of headwinds, 5 ½ westbound. In today’s stacked-up skies, New York-to-Los Angeles flights typically take an hour longer in each direction — if they land on time. On Sunday, the first two American flights into Los Angeles from New York arrived 24 minutes and 85 minutes late, respectively..."
