Should you get a suntan?

Avoiding the sun because you're afraid of skin cancer is like avoiding drinking water because you are afraid of drowning. Both are necessary for human life.

Budget Travel just had an article about suntanning. They cite the usual medical and drug industry message of the sun is bad for you, blah, blah, blah, of course ignoring the fact that because of people listening to the medical and drug industries, 70-80% of Americans have an acute Vitamin D deficiency.

Here's from the Budget Travel story:
"It's the official start of summer, and as such it's also the unofficial start of tanning season. But with increasing research and information available about the risks of tanning, is that beach-bronzed skin worth the health threats?

First off, let's go over sun basics 101. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, sunlight consists of two types of harmful rays: ultraviolet A (UVA) rays and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. UVA rays (which can pass through window glass) penetrate deeper into the skin. UVA rays can suppress the immune system's ability to protect against skin cancer and exposure to UVA can lead to wrinkling and age spots.
The UVB rays are the sun's burning rays (which are blocked by window glass) and are the primary cause of sunburn. The Academy has this good tip: "A good way to remember it is that UVA rays are the aging rays and UVB rays are the burning rays." And note that excessive exposure to either form of UV rays can lead to skin cancer."

Sunshine is free – it has no marketing department for its life-giving benefits. If pharmaceutical companies patented and sold sunshine, the message we receive would be completely different. The American $35 billion anti-sun medical and drug industries have convinced so many people that the sun is bad for you. They have done such a good job that now 75-80% of Americans have a Vitamin D deficiency (I guess the other 20-25% are nudists ). And Vit D has been shown to help prevent at least 16 different cancers (including skin cancer), heart disease, and more.

The drug companies want to sell you Vit D cupplements which have been shown never to be as effective as your own bodies production of Vit D.

It is estimated that at least 600,000 breast and colon cancer deaths each year could be prevented in the US alone if we had more Vit D. Compare this to WORLD WIDE only 48,000 deaths from skin cancer per year. The risk reward ratio is way on teh side of the sun.

This information comes from The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology March 2007; 103(3-5):708-11

People don't realize that the American Drug and medical profession don't want you in the sun so they can sell you Vit D, all sorts of chemicals in sunscreen etc. It is BIG business in the US. And Americans are the biggest market for daily sunscreen, especially women under age 50.

In Italy, their dermatology association recommends people get at least 2 hours a day, maximum sun exposure 3 times a week for Vit D purposes.

As everything in life, use moderation.

So don't let the drug industry scare you away from the sun.

Hope to see you soon in sunny Palm Springs, California at The Terra Cotta Inn for nude sunbathing.

Time to go nude sunbathing - Natural Vit D produced by sunshine is the best for the human body

Sadly, many doctors and the press have vilified suntanning. One of the results of this bad policy is it's estimated that 70% of Americans have a Vitamin D deficiency.

The drug industry and many doctors of course say the way to fix this Vit D deficiency is with a pill or fortification of food. Of course the problem is humans adapted over time to getting Vitamin D the sun not pills.

Now slowly more and more doctors are recommending getting out into the sun as it's good for you. Something nude sunbathers have naturally always known.

Here's an article about Vit D and the sun:

"Basically there are two types of oral vitamin D supplements. The natural ones are D3, and they contain the same vitamin D your body makes when exposed to sunshine. The synthetic ones are vitamin D2, which are sometimes called ergocalciferol.

Once either form of the vitamin is in your body, it needs to be converted to a more active form. Vitamin D3 is converted 500 percent faster than vitamin D2...

However, nearly all the prescription-based supplements contain synthetic vitamin D2, which was first produced in the 1920s through ultraviolet exposure of foods. The process was patented and licensed to drug companies for use in prescription vitamins. In case you didn't know, the vitamin D that is added to milk is NOT D3 but the highly inferior vitamin D2.

The study linked above concluded that "vitamin D2 should no longer be regarded as a nutrient appropriate for supplementation or fortification of foods."

That being said, optimizing your sun exposure and levels of vitamin D3 may, indeed, be one of the most important physical steps you can take in support of your long-term health. Conventional medicine is finally beginning to get on board the vitamin-D3 bandwagon, using the natural power of sunshine to treat type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis during a woman's pregnancy and even tuberculosis.

It is important to understand that the ideal and STRONGLY preferred method of increasing your vitamin D3 level is through appropriate sun exposure...

But when you get your vitamin D from appropriate sun exposure your body can indeed self-regulate and greatly reduce vitamin D production if you don't need it, which makes it very difficult to overdose on vitamin D from sun exposure...

It's estimated 1Billion people in the world have a Vitamin D Deficiency - Time to go nude sunbathing!

Do you know who the happiest people in the world are? If you said nudists, you're right. Now there's scientific proof that proves this. Vitamin D fights depression. And nude sunbathers have a higher Vitamin D level then non nude sunbathers. Thus, less depression.

In western society, especially America, it seems everything is taken to extremes. Dermatologists have sad no sun, yet we need Vitamin D the sunshine Vitamin to survive. Now this extremism has created a massive Vitamin D deficiency in humans. This could be one of the reasons why autoimmune diseases like asthma and allergies are on the rise.

There was a great article in the Huffington Post about Vitamin D. Here it is:

"Vitamin D Health: Why You Shouldn't Shun the Sun

For the last 30 years or so, doctors (dermatologists in particular), health officials, beauty experts and many product companies have been demonizing the sun. They've told us to avoid it because without sunscreen, exposure to the sun's rays will damage skin and cause cancer. But this oversimplification distorts the facts. In the past few years, numerous studies have shown that optimizing your vitamin D levels may actually help prevent as many as 16 different types of cancer including pancreatic, lung, breast, ovarian, prostate and colon cancers. And the best way to optimize Vitamin D levels is through safe, smart and limited sunscreen-free exposure to the sun.

For hundreds of thousands of years, man has lived with the sun: Our ancestors were outdoors far more often than indoors. We developed a dependence on sunshine for health and life, so the idea that sunlight is dangerous does not make sense... Like all living things, we need sunshine, and it feels good for a reason. Much as plants harness the sun's rays through photosynthesis, our bodies use sunlight to help the skin produce the vitamin D it needs to build bones, quell inflammation, bolster the immune system and protect against cancer (including skin cancer).
Why demonize the sun?

..In the case of sunshine, our UV paranoia is contributing to a silent epidemic: Vitamin D deficiency. It's silent because most people don't know they are deficient. And it's deadly, because this deficiency can lead to cancer and a multitude of other diseases. But we've been brainwashed into believing that even small amounts of sunshine will harm us, and told to slather on sunscreen, which blocks vitamin D production and exacerbates the Vitamin D deficiency induced by our modern, indoor lives.

Studies show that as many as three out of four Americans suffer from Vitamin D deficiency. A study published in 2009 in the Archives of Internal Medicine (a leading scientific journal), found that 70 percent of Caucasians, 90 percent of Hispanics and 97 percent of African Americans in the US have insufficient blood levels of vitamin D. Indeed, it's thought to be the most common medical condition in the world, affecting over one billion people and we now have research showing just how essential vitamin D is to health.

...Independent scientific research has shown that whether you live in a sunny or not-so-sunny climate, exposure to the sun and its UVB radiation will increase your production of vitamin D and help lower the risk of a host of debilitating and fatal diseases -- including many cancers, heart disease, high blood pressure, Type I diabetes, multiple sclerosis and depression.

And now the experts are concerned that we're passing an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency down to a new generation. Studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency may imprint on an infant for the rest of his/her life. Infants that are vitamin D deficient at birth can remain vitamin D deficient for the first several months after birth, which may put them at risk of developing many chronic diseases much later in life...

We now know that almost every cell and tissue in our body has vitamin D receptors, which raises the question: Why would those receptors be there if they weren't meant to have an effect?

...The best way to determine whether or not you are deficient is to have your vitamin D blood levels measured and replenish accordingly.

A Vitamin D deficiency is rampant among Americans

For some reason, American doctors went overboard scaring people about skin cancer and the sun. Many Americans are now scared of the sun. They never go outdoors without covering up and using a high SPF sunscreen. Now we find that 85% of Americans are Vitamin D deficient.

I believe in moderation. Everyone should get some sun. When you are in the sun, your body naturally produces its own Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D has many health benefits from preventing breast cancer and prostate cancer, to helping the cardiovascular system.

Last year I wrote about the President of the Italian Dermatology Association recommending people spend two hours per day in the sun total body sunbathing. The doctor recommended total body sunbathing. Here's my previous post: click here It is NSFW.

Of course nudists have known for years that the sun is good for you.

Here's the article about Vitamin D deficiency and Americans:

"Vitamin D linked to cancer prevention, yet 85% of Americans are vitamin D deficient

D is a vitamin we can get for free. It comes from the natural UVB rays of the sun and when people get enough vitamin D it can protect the body’s immune system and prevent ill health.

Most of the United States population, however, is vitamin D deficient.

A team of medical professionals lead by Dr. William Grant and the Sunlight, Nutrition and Health research center conducted an analysis of breast cancer mortality rates according to geographic region location.

The study “shows the highest rates in the northeast and urban areas, and lowest rates in the south and rural areas. According to this analysis, breast cancer risk could be cut in half by sufficient vitamin D levels.”...

The BBC's take on nudity and shame

Or as the BBC says, Grin and Bare it (that should be our motto).

I thought this was an interesting article where the BBC has a TV show about nudity and how we can unlearn our shame of it.

The premise is that we are ALL ashamed to be nude. Humans have learned this from thousands of generations (wrong). What an interesting point of view which is pretty much British and American only. Go to Spain, all beaches are topless and many of the best beaches are nude. I am sure Margaret Meade would highly disagree with this show.

It is interesting, but I disagree with a lot of the show. I bet the reason humans lost their hair had to do with Vitamin D being an antioxidant and those people who could produce the most Vitamin D reproduced the most. And the less fur you had, the more Vitamin D you produced.

I am sure the show is right that with less fur, humans sweat more which cooled us down.

Here in Palm Springs, the Agua Caliente Indians wore animal clothes in the winter, but were naked until the white man arrived in the 1870's. The missionaries taught them shame, it was not a natural concept to them.

I am sure English people will watch this show, but in my opinion a lot of it is wrong.

Finally the biggest pushers of clothes is obviously the fashion industry. For instance now a days more young French women sunbathe topless instead of nude as they want to wear fashionable bathing suit bottoms.

Here is the story:

"Can people unlearn their naked shame?

One of the experiments carried out for BBC's Horizon programme looked at people's preferences for hairy or hairless bodies

Once we were all happy to walk around naked, now we're not. But can an experiment in nudity help us understand why we are so embarrassed by being seen in the buff and help shed our inhibitions?

It's a classic anxiety nightmare - you're standing in front of a room full of work colleagues, your boss is there, maybe even that new colleague you've been trying to impress. And you're stark naked. Ouch.

Why are we so ashamed of being seen naked? Is there something deep in human nature that finds naked skin abhorrent? Some prudishness inherited from our Victorian ancestors? FIND OUT MORE...
Horizon's What's the Problem With Nudity? is on BBC Two at 2100 GMT on Tuesday, 3 March

And how can you explain the rebels who shun convention to spend their weekends hanging out with similar-minded nudists, insisting nothing could be more normal?

Eight ordinary people - none of them nudists - were recently brought together for an experiment filmed by the BBC's Horizon programme, to test some of the scientific theories that explain why naked bodies make us so uncomfortable...

And of course, a naked human is just that bit more naked that other primates. We have only minimal body hair, they have fur. Why?

It's one of the greatest mysteries in evolution, and even bothered Charles Darwin. One of the theories is that we lost our fur as a way of dealing with the heat of the sun. It's controversial, as most mammals use fur to protect them from the sun. But some anthropologists believe our ancestors' unique ability to sweat, along with their upright stance, meant we could cool quicker without fur - prompting the onset of human nudity.

They reckon that evolutionary step towards nudity had huge implications for the human race. With a souped-up cooling system, our ancestors could afford to develop ever-bigger brains - leading to culture, tools, fire, and language.

"Really, without losing hair, without our sweatiness, we wouldn't have been able to evolve the big brains that characterise us today," says anthropologist Professor Nina Jablonski of Penn State University. "Essentially, being hairless was the key to much of human evolution."

So there's reason to believe our nudity arose out of practical need, but that doesn't answer why we're so ashamed by it...

Learned shame
... Over a couple of days, the volunteers had unlearned many of the social conventions that normally govern their life, and reached a new consensus that permitted them to be naked in each other's company.

It chimes with the psychologists' theory that we are not born with a shame of nudity. Instead we learn it, as an important behavioural code that allows us to operate in human society...

But as this code of conduct is something we learn, rather than are born with, we can re-learn it, if common consensus allows. As Phil reflected: "One thing I think I'll take away is how easy it was to bond with complete strangers in what should really be an artificial environment and one that by all society's standards we should feel uncomfortable with."...

Comments:

...It seems obvious to me. Humans invented clothes - at first simple animal skins, to protect them from the environment (cold mostly). Then, as we got better at making clothes and invented weaving etc, we became able to make clothes better fitting and began to make them more elaborate and ornate. Soon, clothes became a symbol of status - the more powerful you were the more able you were to have better clothes made for you. If having very good clothes was a symbol of status or honour, then wearing no clothes became a symbol of poverty and shame.

Good news for nudists - Coffee, Tea, or no skin cancer?

Great news for nudists. Drinking caffeinated beverages may offer skin cancer protection.

In the last few years, scientists have been saying people should be exposed more to the sun without sunscreen, as our bodies produce Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin.. And Vitamin D is a major antioxidant.

Now there is good news for nudists. Drinking caffeinated beverages may help prevent skin cancer.

Here's the story from the University of Washington:

"Caffeine May Offer Some Skin Cancer Protection

Past studies have suggested that caffeine might offer some protection from skin cancer, and new research may explain why...

They found that in cells damaged by UV rays, caffeine interrupted a protein called ATR-Chk1, causing the damaged cells to self-destruct...

ATR is essential to damaged cells that are growing rapidly, Nghiem said, and caffeine specifically targets damaged cells that can become cancerous. "Caffeine more than doubles the number of damaged cells that will die normally after a given dose of UV," he said.

The above story has since expired on Yahoo News, however another site carried the news. Click here to read more about coffee and how it can prevent skin cancer: http://www.ineedcoffee.com/03/skin/

So drink that double latte before going topless or nude sunbathing.

Nudists are the happiest people around

Sunday's parade Magazine had a health article giving people healthy tips for the nude year. One was to get more vitamin D.

Here is what is said "A low level of vitamin D - the 'sunshine vitamin' - can put a damper on your mood. Depressed people had 14% less vitamin D in their blood than non-depressed people in a Dutch study...So load up on D: While you're improving your mood, you'll be helping your bones, too..."

So now we know why nudists are so happy and well adjusted. It is all the Vitamin D our bodies make when we are nude sunbathing.

Nude Sunbathing up to 2 hours per day reduces chances of cancer

The President of Italian Dermatology Association says sunbathing up to 2 hours a day reduces cancers and nude sunbathing is even better.

I remember a number of years ago when American dermatologists were saying no sun, it is bad.

In the above picture, Sailor shows you how much fun it is to nude sunbathe at our resort. sailor is a retired seeing eye dog and is Godiva's best friend.

My wife, Mary Clare is a nutritionist educated at the Univ of Illinois. She thought that no sun exposure was crazy as our bodies naturally produce Vitamin D which is a major anti-oxidant from sunshine. Humans evolved over 10's of thousands of years to create Vitamin D. And fortified vitamin D is just not the same as your own natural Vitamin D.

Our bodies evolved over 10's of thousands of years to maximize Vitamin D production. (Of course if you are a creationist, the earth is only 6,000 years old and man co-existed with the dinosaurs. This post is about science, so you can ignore it and go back to hoping that Sarah Palin wins so we get book burnings and creationism exclusively taught in our schools). One of the purposes of an anti-oxidant is to prevent cancer.

Now more and more researchers seems to agree with what nudists already naturally knew. The sun is good for you and protects you from cancer.

Here is the story:

"Sunbathing 'prevents tumours', dermatologist says
Published on the 17-07-2008A leading Italian dermatologist on Wednesday said sunbathing for up to two hours a day could cut the risk of developing certain cancers by up to 50%.

Patrizio Mulas, the president of the Italian Hospital Dermatology Association (Adoi), said people should not be afraid of soaking up rays since exposure to the sun is crucial to the body's generation of Vitamin D.

''The summer is the perfect time to enjoy the benefits of the sun, and sometimes an exaggerated fear of developing skin cancer risks doing more harm than good,'' Mulas said.

''Constant exposure for two hours reduces the risk of developing prostate, breast and colon cancer by up to 50%,'' he claimed.

Mulas explained that Vitamin D deficiency dramatically increases the risk of developing the three types of cancer.

A recent study by Boston University researchers in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology backed his claim that Vitamin D is beneficial for warding off prostrate and breast cancers in particular.

''Vitamin D also protects against infectious, autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases,'' he added.

Mulas said that the body's need for Vitamin D changes with age, and that while 200-400 units suffice for the under-50s, people over 70 require at least 600 units a day.

''A good diet and exposure to the sun, even just ten minutes' walk a day, will provide 400-600 units of Vitamin D, which is sufficient for a healthy young person,'' he said.

An hour of ''total body'' sun is meanwhile beneficial for post-menopausal women to combat osteoporosis and prevent breast and colon cancers, Mulas said.

...Mulas said people who were unable to soak up the sunshine should make sure their diets were rich in Vitamin-D foods such as eggs, butter, liver and fish rich in Omega-3."
