An interesting look at Freedom of the Press in the US

There is more to this story than just a funny prank in Minneapolis.

As far as the story line goes, this seems like a funny prank, which I bet it is. Someone painted a bra on a billboard advertising the art museum's show of paintings by the grand master Titian. The artwork on the billboard was topless. You can see the before and after photos of the billboard here.

If you notice, this story is from the Daily Mail newspaper in London, England.

I googled this story and saw there were 25 google news mentions. 24 from the US, and this article from the Daily Mail. Guess how many websites in the US ran the before photo? Zero, Nada, Zilch. Now this is the true censorship story. These publications are either such bad journalists that they didn't ask for a before photo from the Art museum like the Daily Mail did, or they are scared to death to show even a 450 year old famous painting of a mythical woman with bare breasts.

So much for freedom of the press in the USA. It's a myth. The government doesn't have to censor us, we're already doing it to ourselves. No more Watergate investigative reporting. News is now about entertainment.

According to reporters without borders survey in 2010, the US is ranked only the 20th most free press in the world out of 178 countries. We're closer in press freedom to Ghana, Nambia, Mali and Latvia than we are to Germany, Sweden, or Switzerland. On a positive note, the US has taken great strides to improve our press freedom. As Americans know, from the years 2001-2009 press freedom in the US almost disappeared. Just 5 years ago we were close to 50th in free press in the world which meant most of the western world had a freer press than us.

Yet, with this story here, the American press won't show a painting of a topless mythical woman that is 450 years old. That is pathetic and our press should be ashamed of itself.

Here's the British story:

"It's a cover up! The Titian billboard that was given a little tweak by rather prudish vandals

Titian's masterpiece of the Goddess Venus has managed to be inoffensive to spectators for more than 450 years.

But one graffiti artist in Minnesota seems to be a little bit prudish about her naked bosom being on display for all to see on a street side billboard.

Clambering up the billboard for the Minneapolis Institute of Arts' Titian exhibition, he gave its star attraction – a bare-chested Venus Rising from the Sea - a bright red bra.

Of course, he could just have been worried the Greek Goddess of Love was a little chilly in the sub-zero temperatures of Minnesota, which would explain why he added the letters: 'Brrr!'...

A spokeswoman for the MIA said: 'Without those words it did look as though some one's trying to censor it.'

'But with '"Brrrr!" it has that whole sort of funny element. Because it is cold.'..."

British women topless sunbathe on vacations, rarely in England

In a recent British survey, 54% of English women said they would try topless sunbathing while on vacation abroad. But not in England.

We've noticed this same phenomenon too. Most of our guests consider themselves nude vacationers, not nudists. This means they love to vacation in the nude at our resort, but would never think of going to a nude beach or go nude at home in front of their children or friends.

People like to try different things on vacation. They're more adventurous. One of the things they're trying more is topless and nude sunbathing. That's one of the reasons why we are one of the most popular of ALL resorts in Palm Springs with one of the highest occupancy rates. We also average about an 80% repeat guest rate with guests from around the world which is one of the highest repeat rates in the travel industry.

Here's the story:

"No bikinis please, we're British: How 80 per cent of women will wear a two-piece abroad, but NEVER in the UK

On foreign shores they are happy to slip into skimpy bikinis - or even go topless.
But when holidaying at home, it seems that British women like to stay relatively covered up.

In a survey, 54 per cent said they would go topless abroad but none was prepared to do the same in the UK.

Similarly, an overwhelming 91 per cent said they wear a bikini overseas, but 80 per cent would never been seen in one on a British beach...

The risk of embarrassment if spotted by an acquaintance is the main reason for modesty, being cited by 51 per cent. More children playing on British beaches was the reason given by 42 per cent...

Naked Rambler Stephen Gough may be sentanced to life in prison for wanting to walk around nude

Typically people who murder someone in England are sentenced from 10 to 25 years in prison. Of course situations very. Also many crimes of passion murderers are sentence to "open prison" which is sort of like an American halfway house where you have your own rooms, clothes, there are no guards and you are on the honor system.

See in America, jailing people is big business. Normally, prison guards have the biggest state unions, so they want as many people locked up as possible with the maximum of security.

England is different. they want people to re-enter society. So for them to want to lock up a nudist for life, that's pretty scary.

Stephen Gough enjoys walking around England nude. Sadly he has been arrested and jailed many times for doing so and he has spent a lot of time in jail. He has said he is like a modern day Rosa Parks trying to enlighten everyone that it is OK to be nude in public.

Now some nudists are uncomfortable with him as he pushes the envelope. However, if woman did not push for the right to vote, they never would have received it. If Rosa Parks did not refuse to go to the back of the bus, it would have been years before someone else got up the courage like her. If women hadn't have refused to wear the neck to ankle bathing costumes of the 1890's and insisted on safer bathing suits, then bikinis would never have been invented, etc.

I wish him good luck.

Here's the story:

British man Stephen Gough given ultimatum: Wear pants or go to jail for life

Naked rambler Stephen Gough, seen above in 2005, has been given an ultimatum: put on some clothes or go to jail for the rest of his life...

But an eccentric British man – who likens himself to civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks – is taking his time to think it over.

Stephen Gough, who has become famous for trying to walk around Britain naked, was found guilty earlier this week of breaching the peace by walking naked in the street after being released from Perth Prison Dec. 17, and refusing a police request to put clothes on in public, the Daily Mail reported.

Gough - who has spent most of the past seven years in jail for identical crimes - declined an offer to walk free on Monday on condition that he get dressed.

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis told Gough he wouldn’t have to be “crystal ball gazing” to realize that the same thing would happen “again and again and again.”

Gough, 50, said he may “potentially” stay in jail forever.

During his trial Gough compared himself to Rosa Parks and said his behavior was “reasonable,” the Daily Mail said.

“Essentially this is about individual freedom and people’s tolerance to other people being different. I understand a lot of people will disagree and have strong feelings about it.”...

“People who have brought great change often have to go to prison first,” Gough said. “People often have to go to prison for many years before others see the light.”

It’s estimated that Gough’s efforts to remain naked have cost the UK about $400,000, the Daily Mail said.

I guess the thought of someone being different and walking around naked is scarier than someone who commits murder in England.

Good Luck Stephen Gough

English TV decides it is OK to show nude models for art classes on Daytime TV

Channel 4 in England ran a art class at 12:30 pm for over a week in July. 37 prudes complained about it. In a country of over 50 million, that is negligible.

Yet, Channel 4 had to take the complaints seriously and make a decision.

They decided tough luck prudes,Channel 4 did not breach broadcasting guidelines.

If this happened in the US, I bet the FCC would have fined the station.

A couple of years ago a teacher in Texas was FIRED for taking her students to the Dallas art museum. The reason? Kids saw nude statues and paintings even though they had their parents permission to go to the art museum. I guess the parents thought there were going to be paintings of dogs playing poker and velvet Elvis's in the art museum.

The only disagreement I have over this issue, is the TV station should have also included male nudes.

Here's the story:

Naked women are acceptable on daytime TV, Ofcom rules

A Channel 4 life drawing programme which featured naked female models was acceptable lunchtime viewing, the television watchdog has ruled...

“It was adult viewing, not for screening in the middle of the day,” one viewer said after tuning in to the programme, in which artists guided students through various drawing techniques.

However, Ofcom rejected the 37 complaints and ruled that Channel 4 did not breach broadcasting guidelines.

The watchdog has written to every complainant explaining that the nudity was justified.

“Life drawing is a well-known and respected form of art. In Ofcom’s view, although the images of nudity were broadcast for long periods of time, they were not presented in a sexualised manner and were clearly justified by the context, given the editorial purpose of the series,” the letter read. The programme was broadcast during school term time and was not aimed at children, the watchdog said, adding that each episode was prefaced by a warning about its content.

Clips from the show are still available on the Channel 4 website, but viewers must click a box to confirm they are over 16 before they can watch the footage.

Channel 4 declined to comment on Ofcom's decision.
