Key West - No on nude beach referendum

The Key West City Commissioners wimped out and voted NO for putting a nude beach referendum on their ballot.

Here is the story:

No nude beach question going on October ballot
Commission declines to vote on referendum

...Key West City Commissioners unanimously killed the item at Tuesday's meeting.

Commissioners said the lack of a specific site raised too many questions, calling it premature to begin the process of changing land-use rules to allow for designated "naturist" areas...

... "I actually do support the naturists in their quest to find a place where they can go in comfort, but we have an obligation both to the naturists and to those who don't want to be -- excuse the pun -- exposed to it."

Interim Commissioner Joe Pais, who is filling out the term of Dan Kolhage, reminded commissioners of the long-gone businesses like Naked Lunch and Atlantic Shores and said that naturism may not be the economic draw supporters portray.

"They [the aforementioned businesses] failed. The thousands of people that are going to be here, they're not going to be here," Pais said. "We're not going to trade our businesses for businesses that have already failed"...

City staff is working with commissioners to set up public workshops to discuss the idea of designated naturist beaches. For more information, go to www.kwfb.org .

There are some interesting observations made in this story. Commissioner Joe Pais said because 2 nude businesses in Key west failed, a nude beach there would not be successful.

Yet, they ignore the fact that Haulover Beach, in Miami Florida is Miami's most popular nude beach.

Further, if they were to look to our town, Palm Springs, California as an example they would see that in the 15 years that we have been open, 14 nudist places have opened and gone out of business. Most of them were foreclosed upon or filed bankruptcy. Yet, at the same time our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn has the 2nd highest occupancy rate of ALL hotels in Palm Springs.

So their argument that just because Atlantic Shores went out of business (it was poorly run), a nude beach would not be successful is not true. Well run nudist businesses succeed. Poorly run ones go out of business.

Now of course if they analyzed that Key West is one of the rainiest cities in the US and nudists LOVE sunshine, and it would be very hard to convince nudists to go to one of the rainiest cities in America, that would be a valid argument.

Now if you want to vacation in the sunniest city in the US, give us The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa a call at 800-786-6938.

Key West in Florida to have a nude beach referendum

Key West may have a referendum this fall on whether they should have a legal nude beach. I jokingly am tempted to write their city council and say, "No, I am against it. Now you will get all east coast tourists who fall for you sunshine state false advertising going to Key West which is one of the rainiest cities in the US to go nude sunbathing. Instead they should coming here to Palm Springs, California, the sunniest city in the US to go nude sunbathing.

But, seriously, a nude beach in Key West is a great idea if run properly. Haulover Beach in Miami, Florida is one of the best run nude beaches in the world and the most popular of all beaches in Florida, topless, nude, or not.

Comparing our resort, the Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort here in Palm Springs, we are the 2nd most popular of ALL hotels in Palm Springs, only the Indian casino hotel is more popular because they give away free room nights.

And of course if a nudist resort is poorly run, it goes bankrupt.

Well, run nude beaches are a boon to tourism. Now if we could only get oue own state parks department here in California to realize that as they want to close down the most popular nude beach in California, San Onofre. We have a lot of east coast tourists stay with us midweek and go to San Onofre on Sat & Sun when it is popular.

Here is the story in USA Today newspaper:

"Key West weighing referendum on nude bathing

Each year, during Key West's 10-day debauchery known as "Fantasy Fest," body painting more likely than not passes as clothing, even downtown...

This week, however, a city commissioner will propose setting aside a 300-yard stretch of Smathers Beach for nude bathing. One reason, perhaps, for a sense of urgency: The demolition of the Atlantic Shores Resort, with its legendary clothing-optional pool bar.

The Herald reports that The Key West Innkeeper's Association has conducted an informal survey that shows 80% of 225 tourism-based business owners supported a nude beach...

If the proposal passes, a referendum on the issue would be held in October."

Vacationers warned No topless sunbathing in Dubai

Europeans love topless and nude sunbathing. All the beaches in Spain and France are topless. And many of the best beaches in Spain are nude.

It amazes me why Europeans would want to go topless sunbathing in nudity fearing and backwards country like the UAE where Dubai is located.

Countries like those should be boycotted by sunlovers until they join the 21st century.

Even here in America we have great nude beaches like Haulover beach in Miami to go to. Now I know that Miami is one of the rainiest cities in the US especially in the summer, and most smart nudists would never fly to Miami for a summer vacation, but then people can also come here to Palm Springs, CA to go topless or nude sunbathing. Palm Springs is the sunniest city in the US and it rarely rains at all from May until December.

At our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa,
we were picked by AOL.com as one of the 10 best clothing optional resorts in the world and the only one that caters to couples on vacation in the US.

Here is the story:

"Keep your tops on, Brit women warned

Dubai: British holidaymakers have been warned they face serious consequences if they are caught sunbathing topless or behaving indecently in the UAE.

... The new advice says "thousands of British tourists risk arrest by not checking local laws and customs before they bare all abroad".

New statistics released by the FCO yesterday show that 24 per cent of British women have sunbathed topless,... - on holiday and over half of Britons travelling abroad have kissed in a public place. {Tom's note: these are jailable offenses in Dubai.]

...the UAE, wearing skirts above the knee is unacceptable behaviour that could lead to fines or official warnings.

- Making rude gestures is considered an obscene act can be (and have been) prosecuted

- Topless sunbathing is strictly forbidden and can result in prosecution or deportation.

- Kissing in public is an offence in the country."

It is time that westerners spend their hard earned vacation money in modern societies. Why give oppressive regimes money where you can be jailed for a simple kiss in public. If these countries want to treat women as third class citizens, why should westerners support them?

We have lots of Brits vacation at our resort. I would estimate about 5% of our rooms year round are booked by Brits as we are the only nudist resort west of the Mississippi that caters to vacationers.

Nude beaches seen as a way to keep Florida beaches open

As the sun is setting on the current federal administration, historians are already debating which administration has been the biggest financial disaster for the American economy, Herbert Hoover's or George W. Bushes. Only time will tell which has been worse.

With the biggest federal deficits in history, they would have been even larger if the federal government had not cut back on revenue sharing with states and cities. Part of these cutbacks have even affected Florida, where Jeb Bush was governor.

Naturally, when a state, city, or county has to cut back, the first thing that goes is services that citizens enjoy. Florida for instance is closing beaches.

Governments never think of cutting back on their bloated salaries or benefits. And only rarely do they cut their bloated staffs. Instead, they think, "we'll make the citizens suffer" by cutting police, fire, education, beaches, parks and recreation, etc.

Richard Mason, who with his wife Shirley have been major supporters of Haulover nude beach in Miami. Back in the 70's and 80's this was a terrible, dangerous beach, and was very run down until it became an official nude beach. Now it is the most popular nude beach in the US. They and their supporters have done a great job.

My wife, Mary Clare, was born in Tampa, Florida. That's why we are in Palm Springs as we know Florida has the rainiest weather in the US.

In the 14 years that our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa, of Palm Springs, California has been open, we have been to Florida about 5 times. We have always tried to nude sunbathe at Haulover, but have never yet been in Miami when they have had nice weather. It was either too cold, raining, or there were big tropical storms for days on end. We have driven by the beach in the rain, so we know where it is. Someday, we will be there and actually get to nude sunbathe.

Here is Richard Mason's proposal for nude beaches:

"Nude beaches seen as cover for cash gaps

Times are tough, maybe even tough enough to start paying more attention to one of the state's leading nudists.

"It's time for the state of Florida to grow up," said Richard Mason, the president of the Florida Naturist Association...

Mason's idea is simple: More nude beaches equals more state revenue.

"If you can build golf courses for golfers, why can't you designate beaches for naturists?" Mason asked.

He uses Haulover Beach Park in Miami-Dade as Exhibit A.

For the past 18 years, that beach has been designated as a sanctioned clothing-optional beach — the only one in the state.

"It's drawing more visitors than the Florida Marlins and the Miami Dolphins combined," Mason said.

And the county is reaping the benefits of the $5 parking fee, which brings in about $1.4 million a year, he said...

"It's a destination beach all because it's a naturist beach," he said.

Mason's pitch for more nude beaches is especially well timed because Gov. Charlie Crist is looking to make significant cuts in state spending, including from the Division of Recreation and Parks...

To do that, the division has come up with a plan to close 19 parks across the state until the economy rebounds...

But instead of closing the parks, Mason has argued, the state can more than compensate for its revenue shortfalls by keeping all the parks open and changing the designation of a few beachfront parks into clothing-optional spots...

The John D. MacArthur Beach State Park in northern Palm Beach County had been an unofficial clothing-optional beach until the state took it over in the 1980s and began arresting nude sunbathers there.

A state appellate court decision ruled that being nude alone does not constitute indecent exposure, and that there must be some lewd and lascivious behavior with it.

"So you can have a naturist beach as long as it is in a designated area," Mason said.

Public officials, however, have been reluctant to make accommodations for nudists...

Like Mason's request this week, the sunbathing group made an economic argument to the tourism board, saying that a nude beach would bring in dollars to the county...

In today's budget climate, its harder to scoff at Mason's pitch without mulling over the pros and cons.

"It's been a successful formula at Haulover for 18 years," he said. "Why not give it a try?..."

A bare-bones budget or some bare-bones bathers."

Are you a nudist - nudist video.

When I originally reported on this story, another nudist blog carried the link. Because of Google censoring all the nudist blogs, I guess that blogger got disgusted and deleted his posts. Thanks google for standing up for the Bill of Rights and the Freedom of Speech in America.

The writer showed a nudist video from Naked News. They had their naked news reporter at Haulover Beach in Miami, FL which is a nice nude beach.

One of the questions the reporter asks the nude sunbathers is "are you a nudist?" Now what "true nudists" will find astonishing is you have a naked reporter asking nude sunbathers and most of the nude sunbathers answer "No I am not a nudist."

I am not surprised by this answer.

I find this answer to be so true at our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa. I'll bet the majority of our guests, would say they are NOT nudists. They just like nude sunbathing and being nude on their vacations. And they would never, ever be nude around their children.

Sorry I don't have a link to that video.

And if you have always wanted to go to a nice, safe, relaxing resort where you can go nude or topless sunbathing, give us a call at 800-786-6938. Visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com

Nude Beach vacation recommended by GoGirlfriend.com

There are so many websites out there. I never heard of gogirlfriend.com before. Here is what they say about their site:

GoGirlfriend.com - Travel with confidence
GG is a travel based opinion site for women going places
GoGirlfriend is where intelligent women go for travel information that matters. We inform, connect and inspire women to live their travel dreams.

Well today they are trying to inspire women to take a vacation at a nude beach in Florida. Here is the story:

"Florida Beaches Guide - Playalinda Beach

Move over wooden bangles and dangly earrings, we're shedding it all when we visit Playalinda Beach, a barrier island on Canaveral National Seashore. Yes, we understand nudism is illegal in Florida, but this is one beach you can shed your clothes and no one will notice - or care.

The most northern parking area of the beach is so secluded that nudism laws aren't enforced. You'll find a wide variety of visitors here from heterosexual couples to gay men to true naturists. If this describes you, Playalinda Beach should be on your (nude) vacation radar. If you're not into public displays of your body, Playalinda has a more conservative section along the parking lots leading up to spot 13..."

For the full story click here click here

Here is another example of the mainstreaming of nude recreation. A women's travel site recommending women to take a vacation at a nude beach.

Of course they made an error in their story. Nudism is NOT illegal in Florida, it is just illegal at most beaches. Why they did not recommend Haulover Beach, I'll never know.

Also why they didn't recommend Cypress Cove which is the best nudist resort in Florida and just minutes outside of Orlando I don't know.

Finally, why they recommended a summer vacation in Florida is beyond me. Everyone knows Florida is the rainiest state in the US in the summer. The National Weather Service says 3 of the 10 rainiest cities in the US in the summer are Miami, Tampa, and Orlando. And this summer the weather has been worse then ever in Florida.

Gogirlfriend should have recommended a nude beach in California. Or better yet, they should have recommended staying at our resort in sunny Palm Springs, CA.

So for your best vacation ever give us The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa a call at 800-786-6938. Visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com

A local Australian politician is against a legal nude beach

A local government official is trying to stop the creation of a legal nude beach in Australia.

You can always tell a prude when they say they are not being prudish.

Back at the turn of the century, the above picture was the typical bathing suit that women wore. Then some risque fashion designers came up with a bathing suit that showed a woman's bare shin, calves, and lower arms. People were scandalized. You would think that women were walking around naked the way people behaved.

These new bathing suits were banned at many public beaches for being too risque. I bet Ms. Blumel would have been leading the charge to ban this bathing suit in Australia.

Here is the story:

"Nude 'too rude'

“Buy your own place and put a fence around it” – that’s the blunt message from Cr Debbie Blumel and residents of the Mudjimba area to nudists who want to share their local beach.

After tabling a petition signed by almost 450 people opposed to nudists being allowed on Mudjimba Beach, Mrs Blumel said there was absolutely no reason the proposal by the Freebeach Association should be allowed...

“If they want a separate place of their own, they should raise funds as other clubs do, buy some land, build a fence, hire their own security and pay for the own lifeguards,” she said.

“Ratepayers and taxpayers should not be expected to pay for the whims of nudists.”

...Signatures against the idea were collected from people in the Mudjimba, Pacific Paradise, Twin Waters and Marcoola areas and Mrs Blumel said it illustrated “the local community’s strong passion against and genuine safety concerns over the proposed introduction of a nudist beach”.

“Local opposition to the nude beach proposal is not a prudish, not-in-my-backyard, reaction by a group of intolerant killjoys.

“On the contrary, the people I represent are sensible and thoughtful in their approach to most life choices, especially ones that impact on personal freedoms.”

Research into nude beaches had shown recurring examples of them being taken over by perverts who engaged in dubious behaviour, she said.

“These people represent a threat not only to the nudists enjoying their leisure, but also to other innocents in the nearby community, especially our children..."

For the full story click here

Being the "good" politician, Ms Blumel immediately brings up the children card. We can't have a nude beach because we have to protect the children. Prudes always play that card.

The other interesting comment is where it is reported "research" shows that nude beaches are taken over by perverts. If they truly researched the issue, they would have learned that legal nude beaches have much less problems than textile beaches. Look at Haulover Beach in Miami, it is the most popular beach in Miami. before it became a nude beach it was located in a high crime rundown part of town. Now the area is a major tourist draw. Personally, I bet this "research" is a total lie.

It is too bad that prudish government officials can interject their own closed minded agenda on the population. It happens here in the US too.

Now if you don't want to have to go to Australia to go topless or nude sunbathing, then give us, the Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa a call at 800-786-6938. Visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com

San Onofre Nude beach ruling appealed by the state

It looks like the head of the California Parks and Recreation wants to waste more taxpayer money. San Onofre nude beach has been a successfully run nude beach for over 30 years until the new head of the parks department decided no more nudes.

She forced nudists to go to court to enforce the California laws allowing San Onofre to stay open. She violated the law closing down this popular nude beach and lost. Now she wants to waste more taxpayer money appealing the case.

Instead of seeing how successfully run nude beaches like Haulover Beach in Miami and Sandy Hook nude beach are, she is imposing her own prudish ways wanting to Close San Onofre.

The losers are nudists and California taxpayers. It is too bad that we can't make her personally pay for all the state taxpayer money she is wasting on this case.

And America is called the "land of the free?" Not if you want to nude sunbathe on American beaches.

Now if you want to go topless or nude sunbathing, at our resort, The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa, give us a call at 800-786-6938. Tripadvisor picked us this July as one of the 10 best clothing optional resorts in the world. Visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com
