Bad hotel fees that must die

I like Chris Elliott. He's the ombudsperson for National Geographic Traveler Magazine and is frequently on MSNBC TV.

In November, he mentioned that nudist resort vacations can be great bargains. He recommended our resort as one of the 2 particularly good bargain nudist resorts. To read his story CLICK HERE

Now he wrote about hotel fees that must die. Here's his story:

"Hotel fees that must die — and how to kill them

February 7, 2010

Resort fees. Mandatory tips. Concierge surcharges.

If you’ve stayed at a hotel in the last few years, you’ve become accustomed — if not anesthetized — to these annoying extras. You expect them. You’re indifferent to them when they appear on your bill...

Here are five hotel fees that must die.

Resort fees
These add-ons to your room bill started innocently enough. Resort guests complained that they were being nickel-and-dimed by extras for beach towels, umbrellas and the use of exercise facilities, among other things. So the properties rolled them all into a “resort fee” and made those amenities “free.” But along the way, the fee got horribly twisted by greed. First it became mandatory, so you no longer had a choice about using the amenities, or, more specifically, being charged for them. And then larger, urban hotels that didn’t have resort-like amenities, decided to copy it... Guests were being hit with the fees everywhere, causing their room charges to mushroom by $15, $20 or even $30 a night. Unacceptable. It’s time to give resort fees the heave-ho!...

Fees for furniture
The most common flavor of this fee is a surcharge for your safe. (Ironically, the hotel often doesn’t vouch for the safety of the items you store in one.) But that’s not the only item hotels ask you to pay extra for. Corinne McDermott, who runs a Web site about family travel, asked to be put in a room with a refrigerator on a recent visit to Quebec City. The hotel asked for an additional $10-a-day-fee...

Concierge, bellhop and housecleaning fees
Believe it or not, some hotels tack on a fee for their bellhops and concierges — two optional services that guests usually pay for with tips. At one hotel, motivational speaker Barry Maher was hit with a mandatory fee for bellhop service. “Never mind the fact that I rolled my own rollerbag to the room and never even saw a bellman,” he says. He also found a fee for housecleaning on his final bill...
How to kill them: Common sense is your most effective weapon against these unreasonable fees. Not only are they often improperly disclosed, but they also fly in the face of reason. The cost of your room should include housekeeping...

Way-out-there fees
Never underestimate a hotel revenue manager’s creativity. Seriously, these employees sit around all day wondering how to make more money from us...

Fees that ought to be illegal
Leslie Dykeman stayed at a Comfort Inn in Scottsdale, Ariz., and an Econo Lodge in Tempe, Ariz., recently. Both charged a $3 per day “energy fee.” “Mind you, I am from the northeast,” Dykeman added, “and in Scottsdale, I didn’t turn on the air conditioner once.”... If these fees are allowed to stand, it can’t be long before we’re charged for pillows, blankets and toilet paper. Enough already...

Point is, at a time like this, you shouldn’t have to put up with any of these fees. A property charging mandatory resort fees, valet fees, safe fees or energy fees doesn’t just hate its customers — it probably also has a death wish.

Some hotels in the nudist industry has come up with the day fee on top of your room rate. I've seen some day fees at more than $50/day.

Some Florida nudist resorts are tacking on these daily membership fees. Although here in Palm Springs one nude place also has day fees on top of their room rates.

These resorts should be ashamed of themselves. Roll your day fees into your room rates so that people know exactly how much you are charging. Having artificially low room rates to falsely entice people to your place and then hitting them with expensive daily membership fees does not create customer good will.

Sadly many places are only looking at the short term, getting a head into a bed and don't care that once that person leaves they hated feeling ripped off and tell everyone at other nudist places never to go to those places that have resort fees.
And I hear guests say it ALL the time.

Here at Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa, in Palm Springs we have always been one of the best values of ALL resorts in Palm Springs. We have NO hidden fees or expenses. Even our soda machine is only 50 cents a can. We WANT our guests to come back and we succeed as we average over an 80% repeat guest rate one of the highest in the whole travel industry.

Now is the perfect time for a fun, romantic, unique vacation experience.

Northwestern University online student magazine recommends suiting up in your birthday suit

Contrary to what the press reports, we find more and more young people trying nude recreation and LOVING it.

Now, we have always been unique. Being a vacation resort, we have always had guests from their 20's to 70's stay at our clothing optional resort just like any other hotel like a Hilton or Marriott.

We encourage people of all ages to try a nice nude vacation. You will love it too. We are happy to see a Northwestern online magazine recommending nude recreation.

Here's the story from Northwestern Universities independent student magazine, North by Northwestern.

"Birthday) suit up!
By Ali Bruzek

It’s almost time for finals. Feeling like your brain has taken a hit? Maybe you should shed a few layers. Hank Hyena’s article, Get Naked: It’s Good For Your Brain, has created controversy on whether being naked really can do a body, and mind, good. Currently there are no studies linking brain benefits and nudity, but there have been some associations to a healthier life.

When asked, some students had no qualms about studying nude. “I wrote a whole essay butt naked on my boyfriend’s bed while he was at practice,” says Weinberg Junior Liza Engstrom...

So whether you’re baring it all or just a bit, here are some novel nudity tips:

Strip Away Stress
A study published in the Journal of Psychology in 1984 found that social nudists had a more positive body self-concept than those who were nonnudists...

“People talk about how it’s relaxing, de-stressing… and obviously there are benefits to more sunlight and vitamin D, of course,”...

“When you shed your clothes, you shed all of the stress in your daily life,” says Carolyn Hawkins, Public Relations Coordinator for the AANR.

Exposing Reposing
Sure, your footy pajamas are cute, but your skin could really use some time to breathe. The evidence is anecdotal, but most people sleep better naked because they feel more comfortable and as a result, have a more restful sleep...

In Nude Company
There are 275 nudist resorts across the country — including in the Chicagoland area. “The misconception in a lot of places is that you have to drop your clothes at the door before you come in the gate — that’s not the case at all,” says Mr. Williams. “You can ease your way in.”

And the general consensus? “Within 5 minutes of getting undressed, it feels like most natural thing in the world.”...

...at the very least, you’ll save yourself a couple of bucks next laundry day."

Northwestern is a great University. It's a Big Ten university.

Of course the University of Illinois is even greater. Why you ask? That's where Mary Clare and I met our freshman year. And of course that's where Marc Andreessen went to school. He is the designer of the Mosaic and the Netscape browser. Without browsers, the internet pretty much was for academics and government people. He really revolutionized access to the net by everyone.

Actually, Mary Clare and I both have a connection to Northwestern. Mary Clare is from Evanston where Northwestern is located. She worked at the Northwestern Co-op bookstore. She used to see Bill Murray there all the time as he was going to Northwestern and would stop in as it was a hang out back then for students.

I took maybe 3-5 business classes at Northwestern after I graduated from U of I before I went to De Paul to work on a masters.

Northwestern should be proud of their connection to nude recreation. The University of Illinois is as they profiled Mary Clare and I in their Jan/Feb issue 2003 of the Illinois alumni magazine as one of the famous graduates from the University. Considering they have 50,000 students and only 6-10 graduates a year are profiled, that is a very big honor.

The Univ of Illinois obviously is proud that we were graduates.

Are Nude Vacations truly the last Frontier?

Expeditioner.com an online travel magazine features articles and videos targeting the young and avid traveler. They just had an article about our resort The Terra Cotta Inn.

Here it is:

“Nude Travel: The Last Frontier

I have to admit, though I have not partaken in this form of travel, the opportunity nude travel offers in the form of traveling lightly by way of packing a minimal amount of clothing is a little bit intriguing. (I’m always looking for ways to lighten my bag — as are most travelers.)

This week the Guardian [A major British newspaper] visits “America’s Nudity Central,” Palm Springs, a town blessed with almost zero rain and year-round sun, perfect conditions for finally getting some sun in those hard-to-reach places. The paper visits The Terra Cotta Inn, just one of several nudist getaways where clothing-optional attire is not just relegated to late-night pool parties like most other hotels…

And what kind of problems does one encounter when staying at a nude retreat? Unnatural sunburns? Uncomfortable encounters when tying one’s shoes? How about trying to figure out how to talk to each other without getting the police called on you…

Eh, I’m not really sold. I pack lightly as it is. Plus, I don’t have room for all that suntan lotion.

Actually, nude vacations are quite normal. A recent survey showed 10% of Americans wanted to go on one. More than golf, tennis, and ski vacations.

It’s just that many people are nervous and afraid of the unknown. They make fun of what they don’t know and understand just like back in grade school. It reinforces their not wanting to step out of the box and try something new and different.

Once you take a fun nude vacation, you will NEVER want to wear clothes on vacation again.

And we are the BEST clothing optional resort in the whole US for couples trying topless and nude sunbathing for the first time.

City Officials inTemecula, California remove a nude paiting from a city owned gallery

Temecula, California is a 1 hour drive from Palm Springs and there is a world of difference between our cities. Where California is normally considered a liberal state, Temecula would feel more at home in the deep south.

The city has banned books before, a parents group even wanted the dictionary banned because it had bad words. Now of course not everyone who lives there is reactionary, but it appears some those in elected office are.

The above is the painting that was banned.

Here's the story:

"Temecula criticized for removing nude portrait from city-owned gallery.

...The National Coalition Against Censorship sent a letter dated Tuesday to City Manager Shawn Nelson protesting the removal of Temecula artist Jeff Hebron's work from a show at The Merc, a city-owned building in front of the Old Town Temecula Community Theater...

"Simple nudity is not sufficient ground for excluding artwork from public exhibition," the letter read. "If it were, a vast amount of great art, including masterpieces like Michelangelo's David, would be off limits...

The letter blames "city management" for the portrait's removal, but Nelson said Wednesday night he didn't know who might have given that order.

"I don't have any information on any of it," he said, adding he wasn't even aware of the issue until he got the letter...

Temecula Community Services Director Herman Parker, whose department runs the theater and The Merc, said the coalition's letter came as a surprise to him.

"We're going to evaluate the letter, evaluate what it says and take a look at what we should do, if anything," he said Wednesday afternoon. "This is all new to us. We're all digesting this."

Temecula Mayor Jeff Comerchero could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon. Hebron and the show's other co-chairwoman, Angela Morris, also could not be reached...

Hebron entered the work, whose title was not immediately known, for "Visual Expressions 2010," a juried show sponsored by the Arts Council of Temecula Valley that is scheduled to run through Sunday...

'IT WASN'T A PORNO'

She said she saw the painting. "It was a little bold, but it wasn't a porno or anything," Landry added.

Art show registration forms typically contain language explaining that the show reserves the right to choose what is displayed, Landry said.

Daniel Foster, a past executive director of the Riverside Art Museum, said one way to deal with controversial art is to put a notice at the entrance of museums and galleries so patrons know what they're about to see. However, some in the arts community view such notices as a form of censorship, he said..."

Now what I thought was interesting is the mayor and city manager who said they were surprised by the censorship, could have easily have ordered the art gallery to allow the painting or issued an apology for the censorship. That is what a responsible public official would do. As Harry Truman said, the buck stops here.

The censorship act happened Wednesday, as of Saturday's paper, the painting is still banned. So much for the mayors and city manager's phony surprise. If a city employee can order the painting banned, then obviously the city manager or mayor can order it reinstated. City council does not have to vote on it.

Censorship is a terrible thing. Sadly our first amendment rights in the US are being destroyed by the reactionaries and extremists in our own country.

We need to be diligent and to remove from political office the bozos that are destroying our rights.

Jessica Simpson vows never to do a nude movie scene

Jessica Simpson: I will never do screen nudity.

Hmmm, let's analyze this story. Jessica Simpson and an intellectual movie role?

Dukes of Hazzard was a major stretch of her acting abilities. I think the world is safe knowing that Jessica will NEVER be offered an intellectual role.

Here's the story:

"Jessica Simpson has vowed never to film a nude scene.

The singer doesn't like the idea of other people seeing her naked.

‘I will never do nudity,' says Jessica, 29. ‘I don't care how dark and intellectual the role could be, you know.

‘I don't care if I frickin' could get an Oscar for it, I'm not going to do it. Those accolades mean nothing to me.'...

‘I don't think people deserve to see what's under my clothing,' she tells Allure. ‘That's only for my next husband..."

Suite 101 website recommends nude vacations

The popular online magazine and website Suite 101 wrote that people should consider clothing optional vacations as an alternative to regular clothed vacations.

Here's the story:

"Naked Truths Exposed About Nude Recreation
Guide to Clothing-Optional Travel and Vacationing

A national travel survey revealed that 10 percent of active travelers expressed interest in taking clothing-optional vacations...

While far from a statement that nude recreation has advanced to the status of a “mainstream” form of travel and leisure, 10 percent is a significant figure indicating quite a number of people are interested in experiencing vacationing in the buff. In the similar survey conducted in 2007, interest among Americans in clothing-optional vacations beat out golf, mountain biking and tennis-themed trips.

Clothing-Optional Travel and Leisure Venues

Opportunities abound for nude vacationing and travel, running the gamut from domestic boutique-like nudist resorts such as the Terra Cotta Inn, one of the top four resorts in Palm Springs, California, to Caribbean nudist resorts...

Myths About Nudist Travel Vacations

...those who do take and enjoy clothing-optional vacations and who are comfortable being naked in mixed social situations disagree. They assert that there is not by necessity a link between nudity and sexuality and that the traditional, ultra-conservative views on modesty and nakedness are built on erroneous prejudices and preconceptions that are barriers to greater interpersonal understanding and self-acceptance. They regard social nudity as neither offensive or lewd but wholesome and natural. They champion the idea that many recreational pursuits like sunbathing, swimming, cruising and hiking are most satisfying when enjoyed without the unnecessary restrictions of clothing.

It is interesting to observe that in a country where skimpy coverings like thong bikinis and other provocative dress are deemed acceptable public wear and where sex is used by advertisers to sell nearly every product imaginable, that so many yet cling to the idea that nudity is lewd and immoral. There does seem to be a ring a truth to the claims by nudists and naturists that social nudity can be non-sexual and healthy in appropriate settings.

Another common misconception is that nudist resorts are seedy. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most are professionally operated properties offering a wide range of amenities...

Finally, the opinions of many who lack personal experience with clothing-optional vacations, likely may be influenced by the common stereotypical view often held regarding social nudity in general that those who engage in nude recreation and travel are primarily older people who are overweight and not the types who should ever appear naked in public... customers come from every walk of life and are products of a diverse demographic spectrum. Most she adds "do not consider themselves nudists or naturists" but simply "view clothing-optional vacations as another choice."

Suite 101 website suggests a vacation at The Terra Cotta Inn as an alternative to Mexico and or Florida

The online magazine Suite101.com is extremely popular. Alexa ranks it the 302 most popular website in the US.

Yesterday, they published an article giving suggestions for alternative, fun vacations this springtime. They wrote instead of the same old boring Florida or Mexico vacations you should come to sunny palm Springs, California. .

I have been saying this for years. Florida and Mexico are way overrated. Florida is the rainiest state in the nation and is colder than Palm Springs in the winter and spring.. And who wants to overpay for some mediocre, overpriced vacation in Mexico? Certainly not you.

Here is what Suite101.com wrote:

"Alternative Spring Break Ideas
Guide to a Bold and Different Spring Break Trip

Feb 17, 2010
Looking for something different than the stereotypical Florida beach or Mexican resort experience this spring break? Consider a ... fun alternative...

For some, visiting a sun-kissed domestic resort with a few friends, relaxing by the pool, indulging in massages and facials and touring some of the local shops and attractions might be just the ticket... One idea that fits the bill is a trip to Palms Spring, California.

An outdoor playground surrounded by breathtaking mountains and canyons awaits those who choose Palm Springs for spring break fun. Palm Springs is a desert city in Riverside County, California, located approximately 111 miles east of Los Angeles and 136 miles northeast of San Diego.

Located on Interstate 10, within the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs is sheltered on all sides by mountains and as a result Palm Springs enjoys a warm, dry climate, with an average of 354 days of sunshine...

Resorts Offering Unique Spring Break Fun

Palm Springs abounds with accommodation choices from boutique-type hotels to full-service resorts...

Terra Cotta Inn is a smaller, boutique-style resort, named in the “Best of the Best” December 2009 issue of Palm Springs Life Magazine, one of the top three boutique hotels in all of Palm Springs. Rooms are spacious and well appointed with the expected amenities. The Terra Cotta Inn spa staff offers luxurious spa services in the privacy of guest’s own rooms or outdoors in the property’s mist cooled gazebo. While there is no on-site restaurant, the inn does provide breakfasts and afternoon refreshments with hors d’oeuvres daily for guests. [Tom's note, we use a local restaurant to cater lunches everyday and 10 different restaurants deliver dinner. We also have a BBQ area for the guests. We are the ONLY nude sunbathing resort in the Palm Springs area where you can check in and don't have to leave for all meals unless you want to. We are also the only one that is busy 7 days a week instead of just weekends.]

...Palm Springs Spring Break Trip Activities

Besides the chance to get a perfect tan without those pesky tan lines, Palm Springs offers lots of other activities guaranteed to produce memorable spring break vacations. For outdoor enthusiasts the area offers:

* Miles of hiking trails to explore
* A 1,200-acre wildlife and botanical park, “The Living Desert”
* The chance to ride on the world’s largest rotating tramcar

For those seeking to explore in a more urban setting, downtown Palm Springs does not disappoint.

* Bountiful shopping opportunities among the modern boutiques and antique galleries found along the palm-lined avenues
* Fine dining establishments and charming cafes
* The downtown Spa Resort Casino
* Live drama, comedy and music for theater fans
* World-class art collection and sculpture garden of the Palm Springs Art Museum

Those seeking a bolder, enjoyable alternative spring break experience need look no further than beautiful, sunny Palm Springs. An affordable getaway destination that offers endless activities for spring break fun paired with relaxation at its finest."

Please welcome Jude, the newest member of the Terra Cotta Inn family

Sorry I haven't posted in over a week. We have been doing serious puppy hunting and I just haven't had the time

Although Godiva will always have a special place in our hearts, we finally felt it was time to get a new dog.

We got Jude, or her official name, Nude Jude just 3 days ago from a local animal pound. Animal control officers learned that that was a mother black lab and her puppies living in a field. The officers were able to catch Jude and a sister. Sadly, the mom and a few other puppies escaped.

They estimate Jude is about 10 weeks old. She had never had human contact until the shelter. And now that she's at the resort all the guests and us just love her. She is so sweet. And she LOVES the guests.

She's black lab and probably German Shepherd. She's adorable as you can see.

If you want to meet her, give us a call at 800-786-6938.

Terra Cotta Inn's FREE, NAKED Super Bowl party is a bargain

I have always said a vacation at The Terra Cotta Inn is a bargain (and so did MSNBC TV in November). Especially compared to textile hotels. Now I saw an ad for a big hotel in Palm Springs promoting their Super Bowl Sunday cabana package.

Now this "special" is you get a cabana for up to 6 people, you can watch TV on a 32 inch flat screen, you get an order of sliders, hot dogs, unlimited chips and salsa, a total of 12 "free" beers, 6 hotel baseball caps, and 1 disposable camera. All for the bargain price of only $600. Yes, that is $600.00. Want a 13th beer, you got to buy it. Want a 2nd hot dog, fork over more money. Want a cocktail or glass of wine, more money.

Now compare that to unlimited salsa, home made pizza all you can eat, assorted dips and appetizers, free beer and wine, soda and more at our resort The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa. And do you know how much our Super Bowl party costs? Zero, nada, zilch!

Can you believe idiots would pay $600 to wear clothes and watch a Super Bowl game where they could have fun all day long at our popular resort and have a fun free Super Bowl Party.

And best of all, because I do not want people to worry about driving home on Sunday night after partying watching the game, that one night of the year, ALL rooms are only $99!!!

Now you know one of the reasons why we were picked as one of the 3 BEST of ALL small resorts In palm Springs this December by palm Springs Life Magazine.

If you have always wanted to visit a clothing optional resort, now is your chance. We are considered the most mainstream nudist resort in the US.

We just have 4 rooms left that weekend.
