A funny YouTube Nudist Colony video
This You Tube nude video is titled "A Nudist Colony Nightmare." It's pretty funny.
The nude video does bring up a few issues however. It plays into some nudist colony stereotypes which lots of people still believe.
One stereotype is the nudists sit around playing guitars singing in the evening. The video is playing into the Kumbaya stereotype. Having been involved with nude recreation for over 30 years I have yet to see someone playing a guitar while other nudists sing. I'm sure it has happened just like some fraternity and sororities members etc have sang to a guitar, But I have never seen it or heard about it at a nudist resort.
Yet, a few times a month we will hear from someone calling asking for information about our resort. One of the questions they ask is something like this "do we have to join in singing in the evenings with other people. We really don't want to."
Next of course is the word nudist colony. Although nudists do NOT live in colonies, and we vacation at nudist resorts, clothing optional resorts, nudist campgrounds, nudist parks, etc., there is still a large segment of people who think the proper term for nudist resorts such as ours is nudist colonies. There is even the famous Budweiser video called Mr. Nudist Colony Activity Coordinator. And of course in this video they had a big Kumbaya moment.
So where am I going with this? Many people still think that nude recreation and nudism is a closed society for members only. We are always asked if couples have to be members to stay at our resort. They do NOT want to go anywhere where they have ti join any clubs or societies. They just want to vacation and relax and have fun.
Being called a nudist colony in itself is not bad unless people think it is a closed group and they don't want to join.
The whole idea of making nude recreation mainstream is one where people don't think nudists are "different" by sitting around singing Kumbaya in nudist colonies.
Now is the perfect time for a fun, romantic, unique vacation experience.
Never been to a clothing optional resort before? No problem. We are the most mainstream nudist resort in the US and are perfect for couples trying topless or nude sunbathing for the first time!
In the December 2009 issue of our local magazine Palm Springs Life, the Best of the Best issue, Terra Cotta Inn was selected as one of the 3 best boutique hotels in the whole Palm Springs area. And we are considered the best not because we are exclusive, but because we are a fun, friendly, and an affordably luxurious resort.

Terra Cotta Inn Discounted rooms for the Palm Springs Film Festival

As readers all know, our resort The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa is one of the best value hotels in ALL of the Palm Springs area. Nude sunbathers are lucky as they get to stay at such a great priced hotel.
And in January, we have our annual room sale on Sunday - Thursdays of stay one night, the 2nd is half priced. So for instance, if you booked for a Monday and Tuesday your rate would be $223.50 or only $111.75/night including breakfast and afternoon snacks, early check in at 10am and late check out at 5pm.
Today the Los Angeles Times had a blog post about "special rates" for the Palm Springs Film Festival. All of the places they quoted were more expensive than our resort. One of the places has a "discount" rate of $295/night.
Not only are we more affordable, we are more luxurious than many of the recommended places. We have top of the line king sized beds, state of the art salt water system heated pool and jacuzzi, free wifi, pool side heaters, in room coffee, dvd players, and more.
It is so hard to convince the mainstream press that one of the BEST hotels and BEST VALUE hotels in Palm Springs also happens to be a clothing optional resort. Some of the press still think of nudist resorts as a nudist colony out in the woods. Well, we have nothing in common with the nudist colonies of olden days. We are better than most boutique hotels and resorts. We are also the most mainstream nudist resort in America and perfect for couples trying topless or nude sunbathing for the first time.
Our local city magazine, Palm Springs Life Magazine knows all of the hotels in Palm Springs. They have been publishing for over 50 years. In their December 2009, Best of the Best issue, they selected 3 hotels as the TOP boutique hotels in town. We were one of the hotels that was selected (we were #2). It's too bad that the Los Angeles Times decided to exclude one of the best hotels in Palm Springs in their blog post just because we're clothing optional.
Sadly people will over pay staying at textile hotels where they would have had a much better time staying at our clothing optional resort. MSNBC in November had a TV segment called "5 reasons to bare it all on your next vacation." They told people clothing optional resorts were much better values than textile hotels and even named Terra Cotta Inn one of the 2 best deal nudist resorts in the US.
So this post is letting the media know that people can come to the Terra Cotta Inn go topless and nude sunbathing all day long and see some of the best movies at the Palm Springs film festival in the evening. And we are a lot better value than the places you are recommending.

Vacation at a nudist Colony - Top wish on many bucket lists

I have been reading more and more blogs lately that have bucket lists. One of the must do items I see is vacationing at nudist colonies or going to nude beaches. Of course most people use the term nudist colony or nudist colonies instead of nudist resort or nudist resorts which is the correct term.
Here is an example from a blog I just read:
"Today my husband is celebrating another year! This year is extra special because it’s nearing the end of an era. He will be 30 next year.
To celebrate his youthfulness, some family and friends put together a little list of 29 things to do before turning 30. We pose this to him as a challenge and also offer it up as a way to ensure year 29 is a very memorable one. As he accomplishes the items on the list, I will blog about them as well as include photos where possible; so be sure to check back often!
29 “Must Do” Things Before Turning 30 (listed in no particular order)
1. Swing by your knees on a flying trapeze
2. Teach the cat a trick
3. Develop your own cocktail and name it
4. Take a day trip to the local nudist colony...
For the full list Click here
One of the items on this persons bucket list besides going to a nudist colony is "wear a Hawaiian shirt for one day", I do that all the time when I am in public here in Palm Springs. I couldn't imagine not wearing Hawaiian shirts as they are so comfortable.
If you wish to knock off another number on your bucket list by vacationing at the best nudist resort in the US then give us, the Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa a call.

AANR to sponsor the largest skinny dip across America

I just received an exciting e-mail from AANR. For those of you who don't know anything about this fine organization, AANR stands for the American Association for Nude Recreation. They do a great job of promoting skinny dipping, and nude sunbathing. They also protect our legal rights when governments want to trample on them. Our resort is proud to be a member of this great group.
I received an e-mail today from them. It says "AANR is about to embark on what may be the most extensive public relations and marketing effort in our history...
we need a major "awareness" program...
Guinness [world records company] has agreed to create a new category for the largest number of people simultaneously skinny dipping...
The media pitch will focus the attention of the world on the joys of wholesome, happy skinny dipping as an American tradition proudly supported by AANR and recognized by he Guinness World Records company..."
I predict this will get massive exposure in the US. It is to be held on
July 11, 2009.
We have been open 14 years. We are the most popular nudist resort for vacationers in the western US. Yet, everyday of the week, we still have people who call wanting information about our resort saying they just learned about us.
Here it is we have been featured in Newsweek Magazine as one of the best small business in America, featured in a Best of LA issue of Los Angeles Magazine as the best travel destination in Southern California (with a 5 page feature article), AOL.com picked us as one of the 10 best clothing optional resorts in the world, as did tripadvisor.com. We have been featured on the Travel Channel, lots and lots of newspapers and magazines, and we are even the only hotel in Palm Springs that had a INCREASE in room sales and occupancy last year.
Yet, lots of people in America know nothing about us or nudist resorts. They have heard of nudist colonies and nudist resorts, yet don't have enough information to realize that some nudist resorts would be the perfect vacation destinations for them. The key words nudist colony, nudist colonies, and nude colony are even clicked on more often than nudist resorts on the web.
I will be keeping everyone informed on this fun event as I learn more.
This year change your routine. Stop going on the same humdrum boring chain hotel vacations where you have to wear a soggy bathing suit all day long. Come stay with us, The Terra Cotta inn clothing optional resort and spa. We are the most mainstream nudist resort in America and perfect for couples trying topless or nude sunbathing for the first time.

Australian Swinger party backfires
There is an Australian so called nudist resort (I find it hard to believe that they really operate like a nudist resort). They announced a couple of months ago that their sales from nudists were way down, so this month they were going to be a sex club.
That's why I find it hard to believe that they were ever a real nudist resort since they are through a month long sex party.
As I have always said, nudists and swingers do not mix. You need to cater to one of the other. Otherwise you get an explosive mixture.
There was an incident at the club that made international news. Here's the story:
"Swingers sex party argy-bargy
...What organisers must have thought would be a national publicity coup has turned into a coup d’ etat, and now the public face of what sounded like a kinky idea on the page has become a very sleazy reality.
One of the more rotund middle-aged male swingers who was trying to enjoy the views at the week-long north Queensland sex-a-thon-sans-phones (without paying with his clothes) has created a mini-riot after four women confronted him about his refusal to show some skin (what the hell were they thinking?)
If you look at a photo of Mr Harrison you might understand his reluctance but the funny thing about all this is after a few weeks of epic free publicity the organisers have now seen there media-savvy promo idea explode in their faces? What worse promotion for the nudist colony can there be than a photograph of Mr Harrison accompanied with a news story detailing his behaviour...
Hardly the kind of national publicity the nudist colony marketing masterminds were hoping for when they first sold the story to the newspapers, eh?"
For the full story click here
This place did receive tons of national publicity for their sleazy party. It is too bad that real nudist businesses that really care about their customers can't get the same type of pr.
Now most of the stories about this lists the place as a nudist resort. This is the post I have seen that lists the party as to what it really was, a swinger sex party.
Calling a sex club a nudist resort, will give people the wrong idea as to what really goes on at nice nudist resorts.
Now if you want a nice relaxing safe and fun vacation at America's most mainstream nudist resort, give us The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa a call. We are NOT a swinger resort, so you will have lots of fun at our resort.
Give us a call at 800-786-6938.

Nudist vs Naturist, Nude vs. Naked, Nudist Colonies vs Nudist resorts - Words have so much meaning

Words have so much meaning to so many people and to others they have none.
I know of certain nudists and naturists who get all bent out of shape if you don't believe them that there are big differences between naturists and nudists. To me nudists has 7 letters and naturists has 9 letters. Big deal. Whatever you call yourself, lets promote fun nudism or naturism.
The same is true of nudist colonies and nudist resorts. Although I think the word nudist colonies is pretty out of date, I would never make fun of a non nudist for saying it. I would just say we don't live in colonies.
Now I guess in Louisiana they are going to have a panel discussion as to the differences between nude and naked. And god forbid someone get those words mixed up.
To me the old song, You say tomato, I say tomato, You say potato, I say potato...
Who cares what word you are using. Let's just work to make nudism more mainstream.
Here's the story:
"Nude vs. Naked: A Panel Discussion, 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29. What is the difference between “naked” and “nude?” Why does one provoke embarrassment, while the other inspires appreciation? And what happens when people get the two mixed up? While the nude is one of the most enduring and universal subjects in art, it has also proven to be one of the most misunderstood and, at times, controversial. Panelists will provide their insights, considering historical, cultural, and educational issues related to the nude in art."

And if you have ever wanted to go topless or nude sunbathing, or is that naked sunbathing, at a nudist resort, or is that nudist colony or is it naturist?

Luann comics feature clothing optional resorts
I would like to thank AANR for pointing out the comic strip Luann (which isn't in our local paper) has a week long strip about vacationing at nudist resorts. They call it a nudist resort, nudist colony, and clothing optional during different days of the strip.
Here is the link:
http://comics.com/luann/2008-12-12/
Nudism is becoming more mainstream when comic strips start mentioning vacations at clothing optional resorts. This is great pr.
The only negative I see is they mentioned the nudist resort is in Costa Rica instead of the US. Here in the US there are so many great affordable nudist resorts to vacation at, but unfortunately so many people think, unless you over pay for a vacation out of the country, it isn't considered exotic.
Now if you have always wanted to try topless or nude sunbathing, give us a call at 800-786-6938. Visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com
We hope to see you in sunny Palm Springs.
Support the American nudist economy, vacation only at US nudist resorts this year.

Nudist colony reporter, Hugh Mulligan passes away
Hugh Mulligan reported The Associated Press for 50 years. He just passed away. I am always sorry to hear of people dying. It is part of life, but still sad.
Hugh Mulligan had reported on many, many breaking stories in his life. I guess however, the AP wireservice feels one of his better stories was about a nudist colony. Here is what they report:
"Competing with AP colleagues in New York for choice feature assignments, Mulligan drew the short straw — a weekend in a Pennsylvania nudist colony. "Oh, great," his hostess-to-be said by phone. "You'll be here in time for the square dance."
Mulligan later described her as "5-feet-2 in any direction and barefoot all the way up to her harlequin sunglasses" and said the July 4 barbecue was "about the same as any other place except that people tend to stand a little further away from the fire.'"
For the full story click here
It is still so funny, much of the world still considers nudist resorts as nudist colonies no matter how upscale we become.
Now about the square dancing part, I bet he visited that nudist campground a long time ago as we have been vacationing at nudist resorts around the world for over 30 years and never went to a place that held square dances.
If you have always wanted to vacation at one of he best resorts in Palm Springs (according to the Los Angeles Magazine), then try topless or nude sunbathing at our nudist resort, The Terra Cotta Inn. Give us a call at 800-786-6938. We are the most mainstream nudist resort in the US.

Hope to see you in sunny Palm Springs! Stop by and see why modern nudist resorts like ours are no longer called a nudist colony.

Nudist Colonies news story on the web
Nudist colonies are in the news again. This story has hit the wire services worldwide. The lastest nudist story is about Cap d'Agde in the south of France. We were there for a week about 10 years ago. You can tell the person who wrote the story knows nothing about nudism as they would know nudist resorts are never called nudist colonies.
We have heard from guests that swingers and sex swappers have really invaded Cap d'Agde in the last few years. During the day there is still the family nude beach where you feel somewhat comfortable, but it is basically anything goes at the swinger beach.
The problem we have always found with swingers and nudist resorts that bring in swingers, is swingers never keep to themselves. They are always pushing the envelope with their behavior and are always very annoyingly hitting on nudists.
The Terra Cotta Inn is not and never will cater to swingers.
In my opinion, Cap d'Agde should have enfoced their policies against public sex. Now they have a mess on their hands.
Here is the story:

Report: French Nightclubs Burned Down in War Between Nudists, Swingers
Monday, November 24, 2008
One of Europe’s most famous nudist colonies has become the subject of an unusual investigation by French detectives after the destruction of three nightclubs in fires blamed on naturist "hardliners."
The normally peaceful Cap d’Agde, a magnet for nudists in the south of France, has been plunged into anxiety as investigators suspect "fundamentalist" nudists of harboring a grudge against the échangistes, or swingers, who are drawn to the town by the promise of sex.
A so-called boîte échangiste — or wife-swapping club — called Glamour, where couples engage in group sex, was the first to be destroyed in April. The next day, the Palme Ré, another orgy venue, also went up in flames. In September, the Tantra club and Zen, its neighboring bar, were leveled in blazes...
Tensions have risen between the naturists, who believe that nudity is a healthy choice of lifestyle and nothing to do with sex, and the échangistes, who are attracted to nudist camps by the prospect of multiple partners."

Nudist Colony Experts
I received a phone call today from a reporter in Texas. The writer is doing a follow up story about the Australian "nudist resort," that said it was economically forced to become a swinger resort for 1 month because of the downturn in the Australian tourism industry. They say they don't have enough business from nudists, so they have to go swinger. This story has been picked up by wire services world wide.
The reporter wanted to know how we are being affected by the recession and are we or any other American nudist resorts we know of thinking of going swinger? (Of course we are not, and we are doing fine).
I asked the reporter how did she hear about us? She said she just googled the words nudist colonies and looked for experts. I talked to her for about 25 minutes and invited her to come out to our resort. She told me I was the 3rd nudist she talked with today and the only one that really spent time talking to her about nudism and the economy.
The purpose of this post is two fold. First, as much as nudists hate the words nudist colony and nudist colonies, they are still used by the mainstream press and non nudists. For instance if you google the words nudist colony you will see that there are 4.4 million results. If you google nudist resorts, there are only 2.17 million results. So there are lots of sites still using the words nudist colony and colonies. Nudists should not be offended when they see or hear these words used. They just need to educate the user. I wasn't offended by the reporter, I also told her we don't live in colonies as nudist colony it sounds too much like leper colony.
The second point is our country is in a recession. Everyone wants business. Luckily we are doing well because we have the reputation of being the only nudist resort that caters to vacationers in the western US. We are not a weekend getaway. So we have customers 7 days a week, not just Saturdays.
PR is very important for nudist resorts. You never know how a story will end up. Last year we talked to a reporter from the New York Times for over 1 hour. She used a lot of our background information about nudism in her story, yet she only mentioned us for 1 sentence in her story.
Then a number of years ago we talked to a reporter from Newsweek about how the hotel industry was doing after 9/11. His story never ran, but he was impressed, so when he did a story a few years later about some of the best small businesses in America, we were featured. That story I am sure brought us Hundreds of thousands of dollars of business.
I am shocked. Why would a business blow off a reporter wanting to write a story that may quote them? I can't figure it out. Reporters normally are pretty helpful to nudist resorts. PR can bring is so many new guests. I will never understand some business people.
Oh well, go figure.
Now if you want to try topless or nude sunbathing at one of the nicest nudist resorts in the US, give us The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa a call at 800-786-6938. Visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com

I am shocked. Why would a business blow off a reporter wanting to write a story that may quote them? I can't figure it out. Reporters normally are pretty helpful to nudist resorts. PR can bring is so many new guests. I will never understand some business people.
Oh well, go figure.

Nudist colonies on TV show True Blood
What is more trendy on TV than nudists at nudist colonies? How about vampire nudists.
Yes, the TV show True Blood on HBO which is a vampire show, had one of its characters say to a police officer that his parents were naturists and lived in a nudist colony in Texas.
When the cop followed up with a call to the nudist colony, it showed baby boomer and older nudists. The phone conversation made the nudists appear very simple minded and not like something fun that a normal person would want to do.
The TV character told the cop that he was embarrassed that his parents were naturists.
Let's just say this show did not portray a good positive image of nudist resorts. I do have to say they did also use the word clothing optional, so that is catching on more in the mainstream world.
Now if you have ever wanted to try topless or nude sunbathing at one of the top clothing optional resorts in the world according to tripadvisor.com, give us The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa a call at 800-786-6938. Visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com

A nice nudist resort story in a local newspaper in Pennsylvania
I have never been to the Penn Sylvan nudist resort. Their local newspaper did a nice story about them. Here it is
"Camp near Reading barely a refuge for 'naturists'
Hidden in woods among the hilly, green farmland of southern Berks County is a place that hundreds of people think of as a sanctuary.
It's a place where they rid themselves of everyday pressures, a place where clothes are shed as easily as stress and anxiety.
PSHS Inc., formerly known as the Penn Sylvan Health Society, is one of the nation's oldest nudist camps...
The camp is at once a microcosm of the outside world and a way to escape it.
Tom, 56, who lives near Pottstown, put it this way: "We have ministers. We have priests. We have moms. We have kids."
While they speak openly about their lifestyle, most members are cautious about giving a reporter their full names or going into detail about their jobs. They don't want co-workers or customers to know about their clothes-free ways.
"They can't fire me over it, but they can ridicule me," said Joe, who lives outside Philadelphia. "They can maybe not promote me."
...She says organizers realize the outside community is conservative, and they are careful about how and where they advertise.
There aren't many neighbors, but those willing to discuss the camp said they don't mind it at all...
"They're regular people," he said. "They just don't wear clothes."
...Regular visitors become friends but often don't know one another's last names.
Nudists, who sometimes call themselves naturists, say they are usually introduced to nudism by someone they know, and that they seek out places where it's OK to be naked.
They stress that nudism is not about sex.
"If you're completely naked, you're not provocative," Tom said. "You're just naked."
Being nude is a way to eliminate social barriers between people.
"There's no Bill Blass swimsuits or cutoff jeans," Rick said. "We're all the same."
People hear about the nudist camp in Berks mostly through word of mouth.
Now they are among about 25 people who live permanently in houses on the grounds.
...Nudists say it's easier for people to be comfortable with their bodies when they see that a lot of other people don't have a perfect body.
There are plenty of sagging breasts and bulging bellies at the camp. Nancy has had a double mastectomy, and another member is an amputee.
"It's a matter of accepting who you are," Robin said.
The camp prides itself on being G-rated, and many members credit Robin for keeping it that way...

Now the one thing I have learned in being interviewed many times is more often then not, reporters get facts wrong.
The one "fact" I question in this story is where it is written new guests hear of the nudist camp mostly through word of mouth. I have found the internet is the best way to get new guests, and next being PR. Word of mouth in the nudist community is excellent for our resort, but outside of the nudist community, guest rarely tell their friends that they like to go nude sunbathing. Just like this story mentions, they are afraid of ridicule. So word of mouth is terrible outside of nudist resorts.
At least the reporter didn't call it a nudist colony.
If this nudist club does not actively promote itself on the internet and they are representative of many other small nudist campgrounds, it then would be no wonder why so many old fashioned nudist campgrounds are not getting many new members.

Nudist colony visit - a bucket wish of a blogger

I have been reading more and more blogs that have bucket lists. One of the must do items I see a lot is vacation at a nudist resort or go to a nude beach. Of course like here, sometimes they use the world go to a nudist colony.
For the full list Click here One of the items "wear a Hawaiian shirt for one day", I do that all the time when I am in public here in Palm Springs. I couldn't imagine not wearing Hawaiian shirts as they are so comfortable.
